LiveU has been chosen to participate in the FIDAL Open Call for the ‘Large Scale Field Trials Beyond 5G’ research project.

FIDAL aims to evaluate innovative solutions in the fields of media and Public Protection and Disaster Relief (PPDR). This project is co-funded by the European Union’s Horizon Europe program and the Smart Networks and Services initiative.

Testing Use Cases for Remote Production and Beyond 5G Technologies

As part of the FIDAL/B5VideoNet (B5GVN) project, LiveU will test various use cases including on-site and off-site remote production, cloud-based production, mobile production, and edge-cloud production. These trials will assess Beyond 5G (B5G) technologies, such as network slicing, edge computing, standalone private networks (SA/SNPN), and network exposure.

LiveU EcoSystem Elements for Field Trials

The trials will utilize components of the LiveU EcoSystem, including the LU800 multi-cam portable encoder, LiveU Mobile Receiver, LiveU Xtend bonding device, LU-Link cloud service, and LiveU Ingest automatic recording solution. These technologies will be tested to evaluate performance in media production environments.

Network Slicing and Edge Computing in Real-World Scenarios

LiveU’s participation in B5GVN will include tests on network slicing, focusing on guaranteed bandwidth, latency, and video performance in high-demand areas with challenging network conditions. These tests will compare uplink and downlink oriented slices in both private networks and multi-location event settings.

LiveU will also test the use of edge computing within operator edge clouds to reduce latency. The B5GVN project aims to explore the advantages of localized video transfers, which could lower production costs for the media industry.

Private 5G-SA Networks for Remote Production

The project will also explore the potential of LiveU’s On-site Production solution, which uses the 5G-SA private network and network exposure capabilities. This system enables multi-cam production, either on-site or in different locations, with the uplink and downlink kept within the same network.

Collaboration with Research Institutions and Partners

LiveU will collaborate with the University of Patras, a leading institution in communication research, for the media and entertainment portion of the project. Other FIDAL partners involved in the project include Nova, FORTH, and Ubitech, which will provide network exposure capabilities.

Baruch Artman, LiveU’s AVP and Head of 5G Projects, noted that this project offers valuable insights into the optimization of Beyond 5G technologies for media production workflows.
