ITV News has expanded its use of LiveU’s IP-Video EcoSystem to enhance the efficiency and sustainability of its live newsgathering operations.
The collaboration, which began in 2022, covers the entire video production process, from contribution and production to distribution. The broadcaster aims to increase the sustainability of its newsgathering by utilizing the latest LiveU technologies, resulting in both environmental and workflow improvements.
Deployment Across the Video Production Chain
The deployment includes a range of LiveU portable mobile encoders, such as the LU800 and LU300, used across the UK for daily newsgathering. The LU800 units, capable of multi-camera feeds, are integrated into ITV’s fleet of sustainable news production vehicles (NPVs), developed by NEP as plug-in hybrids with onboard batteries. These units can also function independently, outside the NPVs. The LU300 encoders serve as mobile units, expanding the network’s newsgathering capabilities. Additionally, the LU-Smart mobile app is utilized for further flexibility.
Use of LiveU’s Video Return and Audio Connect
ITV News also leverages other features of the LiveU EcoSystem, including the Video Return capability, which enables video feedback from the studio to field reporters for studio interactions and outside broadcasts. Audio Connect is used to facilitate communication between news anchors and field teams.

Integration of LiveU Matrix for IP Video Distribution
The broadcaster uses the LiveU Matrix cloud-native IP video distribution platform to share and receive live feeds across various regions and with ITN in London, as well as with external partners. This integration enhances ITV’s ability to manage high-quality, low-latency live content.
Strategic Collaboration with LiveU
Steve Teague, Head of Technical Services at ITV News, highlighted the importance of LiveU’s IP-based platform, which has allowed ITV to transition to a service provider model with LiveU. This close collaboration has led to a stronger partnership and has significantly shaped ITV’s newsgathering approach.
Teague emphasized the benefits of this collaboration, particularly in the development of the Audio Connect feature, which was refined based on real-world feedback. This process has improved efficiency and strengthened the working relationship between ITV News and LiveU.
Continuous Improvement and Customer Collaboration
Matt Stringer, Sales Director at LiveU, noted that this project has further developed LiveU’s approach to customer collaboration. The feedback from ITV News has contributed to the ongoing evolution of LiveU’s product offerings, ensuring that the company remains at the forefront of the broadcast market.
