The “360 Seconds. Broadcast News and Commentary” hosts discuss the latest technological advancements in the broadcasting industry in their latest video.
- Marshall Electronics Unveils Revolutionary CV630-NDIW UHD PTZ Camera
- Riedel Enhances Live Production Portfolio with RiMotion R10
- Blackmagic’s Latest Innovation: 6K Camera with Dual Native ISO and CFexpress Recording
Hosts: Philip Grossman, host and co-producer at Visionaries; Mary Ann Seidler, owner of First Light Media and consultant for multiCAM Systems and Telos Alliance; and Maria Kholodova.
The first topic discussed is the Marshall CV 630 PTZ camera, which has several features such as a 30 times optical zoom, 4K UHD resolution, NDI Hx2 technology, and multiple outputs.
Maria: Marshall introduces CV630-NDIW UHD PTZ Camera: a 30X optical zoom powerhouse with 4K UHD resolution, advanced NDI|HX2 technology, and multiple outputs, perfect for diverse professional AV and broadcast applications.
Mary, I know you had some questions about it for Phillip.
Mary: Well, I do. We’re seeing a lot of different companies entering the PTZ camera market. What do you think makes this camera different? Is there anything unique that you’re seeing?
Philip: I don’t know if I’d say there’s anything unique about this one. The fact that they’ve included NDI, which seems to be pretty standard, is notable. It’s got HDMI, it’s got SDI. I think we’re seeing more of this because remote productions have become something practical. In the past, remote production was very difficult. Now that we’re able to get the signals back more easily, maybe we don’t need all the camera people. I also think we’re seeing more complexity in productions. People are trying to step up their game in terms of what they’re producing, which requires more cameras. This would also require more camera operators, and that tends to become expensive. So, it’s just that this camera is another player in the market. It’s good to see more players in the market. You have more opportunities and options to choose from, and hopefully, it’ll push other manufacturers to do similar things. The UHD and adding the NDI are good. I’d like to see JPEG XS or 2110 included, but those will come eventually.
Mary: I’m a big fan of that NDI.
Philip: Yeah. It simplifies things and makes them accessible to anyone without needing an expensive networking infrastructure.
The next topic is the Blackmagic Cinema Camera 6K, which boasts a full-frame 6K sensor, 13 stop dynamic range, and low light performance.
Maria: The Blackmagic Cinema Camera 6K features a full-frame 6K sensor, 13 stops of dynamic range, L-Mount lens compatibility, and dual native ISO up to 25,600, offering unparalleled image quality and low-light performance. Philip, can you talk a little bit about that?
Philip: It’s interesting how Blackmagic is really focusing on camera development, introducing some impressive models. I’m curious about their choice of the L-Mount as the standard, though. My understanding is that the L-Mount is similar to the EF Mount but adaptable for many other lenses, like EF and PL, which are more standard in the industry, along with the B4 Mount. The dual ISO is a great feature. The form factor is intriguing; it’s akin to a 35mm style, maybe a bit chunkier, so perhaps it’s a hybrid camera. It’s fascinating to see them release cameras with higher resolutions like 6K. We’ve talked about shooting in 4K for 2K to allow for reframing in post-production. While we still don’t see much 4K delivery, having 6K does provide additional resolution for reframing and recropping, offering a lot of flexibility.
The final topic is the Remotion R10 replay solution from Riedel, which expands its life production range with up to eight multiformat camera inputs and two outputs. The speaker also discusses the potential impact of AI technology on the camera technology and hopes to see more processing happening in this field.
Maria: Riedel’s RiMotion R10 Replay Solution expands its live production range, offering up to eight multi-format camera inputs and two outputs in a 1RU server, combining high channel density with affordability. So Mary, I know you had questions about that.
Mary: I do. Phillip, with several new players in this area, do you think this is becoming a significant category? And are there features missing that you’d like to see in this equipment?
Riedel releases RiMotion R10 replay solution, expanding its catalogue of live production offerings
Philip: Yeah, it’s quite interesting. This field was originally dominated by EVS, known for live instant replay. Then Evertz introduced a more affordable JPEG 2000 based solution. Now, with Riedel entering the scene, and likely more to follow, the landscape is changing. What I’d like to see in these systems is simplicity. Instant replay, primarily used in live sports, requires a significant team. It’s challenging for one person to manage multiple machines, selecting and cropping scenes, and coordinating with the producer, director, and technical director for playback. The capability of these systems to handle numerous camera inputs is making them more versatile. I foresee AI playing a role soon, both in converting lower frame rate footage into higher frame rate and in assisting with shot selection. It’s fascinating to see new players in this market, especially considering it was Harris who initiated this but is no longer in the game. I’m eager to see how AI will aid in shot selection, recognizing player movements, and making the process more manageable. We’re definitely heading towards more sophisticated processing.
