Martin Audio partner Southard Audio has been supporting the multi-stage event with sound reinforcement from the beginning. This year, they deployed three Wavefront Precision systems—a WPL rig and two WPS hangs.
Jason Misterka, Southard managing partner, noted that they switched to WPL and other Martin Audio systems at DelFest after Covid, starting in 2022. The new systems have been highly effective for their applications.
Three-Stage Deployment
The Grandstand system, the primary stage setup, used a large-format WPL line array. The main PA consisted of 24 WPL (12 per side) with eight WPL outfill stage right to cover the grandstands. Additionally, four XD15 frontfills, two CDD15 for VIP tents, SXH218 subs, iK42 amps, THS sidefills, LE200 wedges, and Linea Research monitor amps were used.
Challenges of the Grandstand
The Grandstand, set at an odd angle along one side of the 750ft flat field, posed significant challenges. Misterka explained the need for a tall stage to cover the field effectively. The Martin Audio rig, along with an 8-box outfill array hung on Applied LA12-25 towers, performed exceptionally well, sounding like nearfield monitors even at a distance of 500-plus feet.
Potomac Stage Configuration
The Potomac stage featured 16 WPS for the main PA, four SXH218 subs, iK42 amps, and a pair of CDD15 frontfills. This stage has evolved from a band competition stage to a full music stage over the years.
Indoor Setup at the Music Hall
The Music Hall, an indoor stage, used 16 WPS (eight per side) on lifts, eight SXC118 subwoofers, and four Martin Audio FlexPoint FP12 as frontfills, driven by Martin Audio iK42 amps.
Sound Control and Optimization
Matt Hudson from Southard Audio focused on the prediction for the large field and the outfill prediction for the Grandstand. The ‘Hard Avoid’ function was used on all stages to minimize noise for the string bands. The SXH218 subs at the Grandstand stage were set up in a L/R cardioid configuration. In the Music Hall, emphasis was placed on avoiding ‘Non-Audience’ areas and minimizing back wall reflections using the inherent cardioid characteristics of the SXC118 subs.
Focus on Acoustic Music
Southard Audio’s long history with acoustic music was a significant factor in their approach. Misterka highlighted the importance of minimizing bleed from the main PA system to achieve cleaner microphone sound and more gain-before-feedback. This expertise has made Southard Audio a premier provider of production services for acoustic music festivals on the Eastern side of the US.
Positive Feedback from Engineers
Key Chang, FOH Engineer for the Del McCoury Band, praised the focused performance of the WPL system, making the mixing of string bands with large diaphragm condenser mics nearly effortless. Production manager William Kesler also commended the smooth and even coverage provided by the Martin Audio rigs across the entire site.
Southard Audio Crew
The Southard Audio crew for DelFest included Matthew Hudson, Chad Wyatt, Tim Reckley, David Pelikan, Bob McNichols, Phil Speiss, Michael Stover, Sven Giersmann, Tim Turner, Eric Shy, and Slim Prescott.
DelFest’s ongoing commitment to enhancing its technical infrastructure has resulted in a superior audio experience, thanks to the deployment of Martin Audio systems by Southard Audio. The festival continues to be a leader in providing exceptional sound reinforcement for both traditional bluegrass and large-scale rock bands.
