The Copa América USA 2024 tournament kicks off this week with Argentina facing Canada at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. HBS is heading the production efforts for all 32 matches, culminating in the Copa Final on July 14 at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami. Miami hosts the HBS Production Hub, operating from Mediapro’s Miami production center.

Collaboration Focus: HBS and Mediapro

Enrique Rabasco, HBS project director, highlights their collaboration with Mediapro for hub services, including graphics, commentary, postproduction, control rooms, and QC areas. This edition marks the tournament’s 48th year and the second time it’s held in the U.S. The event features 10 CONMEBOL teams and six Concacaf guest teams: the United States, Panama, Jamaica, Mexico, Canada, and Costa Rica, qualifying through the 2023-24 Concacaf Nations League.

Multilingual Broadcasting and Technical Setup

Matches will be broadcast in Spanish, Portuguese, and English, with rightsholders choosing between 1080p HDR or 1080i SDR feeds via satellite. Despite a condensed four-month planning period, Rabasco reflects positively on the preparation process, emphasizing its efficiency and success.

Technical Deployment Across U.S. Stadiums

In addition to the Production Hub in Miami, Kasia Humska, HBS production lead, details the deployment of nine trucks across 14 stadiums nationwide. These include two trucks from Mediapro and seven from Game Creek Video, equipped with various camera tiers: Tier C (21 cameras), Tier B (23 cameras), and Tier A (37 cameras for the Opening Match, semifinals, and final).

Aerial Coverage and Remote Operations

Aerial coverage will feature drones, weather permitting, with external jib cameras deployed where flight restrictions apply. Helicopters will capture aerial views for key matches. Rightsholders will operate onsite at stadiums, particularly for high-interest matches involving Argentina, with remote operations from their respective headquarters.

Learning and Collaboration

Peer Seitz, HBS project manager, underscores this Copa América as a learning experience for both HBS and CONMEBOL, marking their first direct collaboration. Adjustments in broadcast partner management and match coverage have been part of the learning curve, fostering a productive and cooperative environment between the two entities.
