DPA Microphones in NASCAR Coverage

NBC Sports has upgraded its NASCAR broadcasts by introducing DPA Microphones’ 4062 Omnidirectional Miniature Lavaliers.

The microphones are placed in various parts of the cars, including bumpers and helmets, to capture more detailed racing sounds.

Technical Demands

According to Matt Hogencamp, NBC Sports’ Director of Remote Technical Operations for Motorsports, the team needed lightweight, durable, and compact microphones to withstand vibration, debris, and temperature changes without affecting car performance.

Production Efficiency

The microphones’ reliability reduced post-production work and minimized the need for replacements during races, allowing the crew to focus on other live broadcast elements.

Creative Application

The new audio setup allows viewers to hear unique engine and in-car sounds, adding realism to race coverage. Hogencamp emphasized that consistent audio performance helped improve storytelling in live broadcasts.

Partnership with DPA

Hogencamp also manages technical operations for other racing series and works closely with vendors like DPA Microphones. The collaboration includes product testing and adjustments to meet race-day requirements.
