NEP Finland, a leading name in the Finnish TV production industry with a global footprint, has taken a significant step forward by relocating to new headquarters in Helsinki’s Pasila district.
This move included the creation of three cutting-edge studios and five control rooms. A key objective for NEP Finland was to automate and enhance production processes for major weekly broadcasts like the Finnish Lotto and Eurojackpot, produced for Veikkaus, the Finnish national betting agency.
The Search for a Solution
Under the guidance of Jyrki Lepistö, NEP Finland’s deputy managing director, the company embarked on a quest for technology that would not only automate their production but also cut costs and allow for flexibility in remote and high-resolution workflows. The solution sought needed to support IP-based operations on commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) hardware, offer flexible resource deployment, and include a built-in graphics engine.
Selection of NetOn.Live’s LiveOS
Lepistö was introduced to NetOn.Live’s LiveOS platform through collaboration with Pipeline Media and the Finnish public broadcaster, YLE. Impressed by a demonstration of LiveOS’s all-IP, software-based production environment, NEP Finland chose it for its capability to streamline and automate their Lotto and Eurojackpot productions. The system’s software nature and compatibility with SMPTE ST 2110 IP standards made it an ideal choice for enhancing production flexibility and efficiency.
Implementation and Benefits
The implementation of LiveOS was rapid and efficient, going live in January following an installation period over the Christmas holidays. The system’s adaptability has allowed NEP Finland to design production templates for quick deployment, significantly reducing the need for physical and human resources. The integration of SPX Graphics into LiveOS has further simplified operations, allowing for the automation of camera movements and graphics based on live data feeds.
Training and Support
Despite initial hesitancy from some team members, the transition to the new system proved smooth thanks to the intuitive and modern interface of LiveOS. Training was completed swiftly, facilitated by effective support from the system’s providers.
A Vision for the Future
NEP Finland anticipates further automating and streamlining their production processes using LiveOS, benefiting from its resolution independence and potential for future expansions without the need for dedicated hardware. The system’s flexibility also opens up opportunities for introducing new entertainment productions, underscoring NEP Finland’s commitment to innovation and efficiency in TV production.
