Videosys Broadcast and Broadcast Rental Develop New Camera Control System

Videosys Broadcast has partnered with the Dutch company Broadcast Rental to develop a new camera control system.

This system allows broadcasters to integrate Sony’s compact FX6 camera and a lightweight MOVI Rig into their HDR production workflows.

Background

Broadcast Rental introduced full-frame cameras with a MOVI rig 12 years ago. With advancements in camera technology and increasing demand for HDR workflows, the company decided to switch to the Sony FX6. This combination allows broadcasters to capture filmic shots with real depth of field, superior autofocus performance, and excellent cinematic expression without compromising the control offered by larger, heavier broadcast camera systems.

Broadcast Rental’s History and Expertise

Founded in 2009 by GP Slee, Broadcast Rental has a long track record in the broadcast industry. Based in Hilversum, the company supplies turnkey solutions, MCR, Fly Packs, RF HD/UHD transmissions, and state-of-the-art equipment. Their solutions have been used in high-profile projects such as Formula 1, the Olympics, the FIFA World Cup, the UEFA EURO Tournament, Champions League Football, the Tour de France, the Dakar Rally, the MTV European Music Awards, and various concerts.

Project Genesis

Frank Steenbeek, Chief Operating Officer at Broadcast Rental, stated that the desire to incorporate the Sony FX6 into HDR broadcast workflows sparked this project. He highlighted the increasing sophistication of cameras like the FX6 and their appeal to broadcasters. However, integrating these cameras into wireless HDR workflows was challenging, prompting the development of a new solution that maintained creative benefits without sacrificing wireless control.

Collaboration and Development

Broadcast Rental began developing camera systems with MOVI rigs in 2012, collaborating with MOVI operator Ben de Graaf. Initially, the goal was to use filmic cameras in live sports events, specifically soccer matches. They needed a system that offered a wireless connection for signal and camera control. This collaboration led to the creation of a MOVI rig system with all necessary details.

Technological Innovation

Twelve years later, the setup needed refreshing. Broadcast Rental, with Ben de Graaf and Videosys Broadcast, worked on the project. GP Slee mentioned his long-standing relationship with Videosys CEO Colin Tomlin and their collaboration on camera control, RF links, and camera backs. Broadcast Rental approached Videosys to develop a control system for the Sony FX6.

Solution Development

The project took three months to complete, involving modifications to the Sony FX6 for effective broadcast workflow use. Colin Tomlin explained that the FX6 lacked remote control capabilities like traditional broadcast cameras. Videosys’ designer George Bairaktaris re-mapped control features using Sony RCP1500 or Sony RCP3500 remote control panels. They utilized a combination of the camera’s features and post-processing through a Color Box to devise acceptable control for broadcast use.

Conclusion and Future Deployment

Frank Steenbeek praised the innovative solution, which integrates the FX6 into the existing Videosys wireless ecosystem. This integration reduces rigging time and increases system security by minimizing failure points, crucial for live events. The new system was successfully tested at the Holland Veterans football tournament in May. Broadcast Rental plans to deploy the new MOVI Ben system in various football matches throughout Europe, including UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europe League, and UEFA Conference League games featuring Dutch teams.
