Nexus G1 Box Camera to Ship This Year for Under $3,000

The Nexus Project, led by Thomas Boland’s company, has been in the spotlight since early January for its innovative modification of the Blackmagic Design Pocket 6K G1 into a box camera, known as the Nexus G1.

With a background in industrial design and research and development, Boland’s company is well-equipped to undertake such a modification project.

Recent Updates and Developments

Thomas Boland has actively engaged with the community on Facebook, addressing inquiries about the Nexus G1, including its pricing and availability. The team has been finalizing the design brief, sourcing components for potential new features, and focusing on the exterior body design of the Nexus G1. The goal is to perfect the exterior, which will then guide the internal engineering, including the sub-frame and component placement.

To achieve the desired body design, the team has created various mockups, including a semi-final body form produced through resin printing. This prototype allowed for the attachment of a lens and a V-mount battery, although it remains a rough mockup for internal reference. The Nexus G1’s body now boasts a compact and optimized shape, measuring 110mm in width, 120mm in height, and 170mm in length, or 117mm with an EF mount, without protrusions.

Focusing on Audio and Compatibility Enhancements

The project is also examining the camera’s audio capabilities, with plans to possibly integrate physical audio gain knobs for easier utilization of the built-in audio system. The Nexus G1 will now be based on the Blackmagic Pocket 6K G2 model due to the unavailability of the 6K G1 stock. This update introduces an EVF port compatible with the Blackmagic EVF and two XLR ports. Additionally, a DIY version of the Nexus for 6K G1 owners is being considered, depending on interest.

Advancements in Display Technology

The development of a built-in touch display control system is underway, featuring a 3.5” display that ensures visibility from any angle and in direct sunlight. This advancement aims to enhance user interaction with the camera.

In summary, the Nexus Project’s efforts to modify the Blackmagic Design Pocket 6K camera into a more compact, user-friendly box camera continue to progress, with significant advancements in design, audio capabilities, and display technology.
