Nikon Z6III: World’s First Partially-Stacked CMOS Sensor

Nikon has introduced the Z6III, a full-frame mirrorless hybrid camera featuring what is claimed to be the world’s first partially-stacked CMOS sensor.

Additionally, the Z6III boasts the brightest electronic viewfinder (EVF) among mirrorless cameras and includes numerous features inherited from Nikon’s flagship models, the Z8 and Z9.

Sensor and Processor Features

The Z6III is the first mirrorless camera to utilize a new sensor architecture, which includes multiple high-speed processing circuits stacked in layers above and below the sensor’s imaging area. This new 24.5MP (35.9 mm x 23.9 mm) sensor, combined with the EXPEED 7 image processing engine, ensures high-speed readout and rapid shooting. According to Nikon, the readout speed is approximately 3.5 times faster than the previous-generation Z6II. The camera supports 6K N-RAW and ProRes RAW video recording, as well as continuous shooting at up to 120 frames per second with Pre-Release Capture.

Nikon Z6III: World's First Partially-Stacked CMOS SensorVideo Recording Capabilities

The Z6III can record 12-bit 6K/60p N-RAW and 6K/30p ProRes RAW video, as well as 10-bit 5.4K ProRes 422 and H.265 formats. It also allows for oversampled 4K UHD/60p video from the 6K sensor. The camera supports multiple video formats, including N-RAW (12 bit), Apple ProRes RAW HQ (12 bit), Apple ProRes 422 HQ (10 bit), H.265/HEVC (8 bit/10 bit), and H.264/AVC (8 bit). Slow-motion footage can be recorded at up to 10× with Full HD/240p H.265 video.

Nikon Z6III: World's First Partially-Stacked CMOS SensorRecording Resolutions and Frame Rates

The Z6III supports the following resolutions and frame rates:

  • 5.4K (5376 x 3024): 60p/50p/30p/25p/24p
  • 4K UHD (3840 x 2160): 120p/100p/60p/50p/30p/25p/24p
  • Full HD (1920 x 1080): 240p/200p/120p/100p/60p/50p/30p/25p/24p
  • Slow-motion Full HD (1920 x 1080): 30p x4/25p x4/24p x5
Nikon Z6III: World's First Partially-Stacked CMOS SensorRecording Time Limitations

Nikon states that the Z6III’s efficient heat dissipation design allows continuous 4K UHD/60p recording for up to 125 minutes, requiring an external power supply such as a portable battery or the MB-N14 power battery pack.

Nikon Z6III: World's First Partially-Stacked CMOS SensorAudio Capabilities

The camera includes a built-in stereo microphone and supports external audio devices via a line input. Audio input sensitivity, attenuator, frequency response, and wind noise reduction functions are adjustable.

Additional Video Features

The Z6III features high-resolution zoom, allowing up to 2x zoom in Full HD and 1.4x in 4K UHD. The camera also supports creating 4K UHD time-lapse videos in-camera and interval timer shooting for high-quality time-lapse videos using RAW files.

Nikon Z6III: World's First Partially-Stacked CMOS SensorAutofocus and Build Quality

The camera inherits a fast autofocus system from the Z8 and Z9, capable of detecting nine subject types, including people, animals, and vehicles. The Z6III is constructed from magnesium alloy and Sereebo material for durability and light weight. It is sealed against dust and moisture, and can operate at temperatures as low as -10°C.

The Z6III’s 5,760k-dot EVF, with a brightness of up to 4,000 nits, is the brightest ever in a mirrorless camera. The 3.2-inch rear LCD touchscreen can be used for video production and low-angle framing.

Nikon Z6III: World's First Partially-Stacked CMOS SensorRecording Media and ISO Performance

The camera features two slots for memory cards: one for CFexpress/XQD and one for SD cards. It supports a wide native ISO range of 100-64,000 (51,200 for video), expandable to 204,800. The built-in 5-axis image stabilization offers up to 8 stops of vibration reduction.

Nikon Z6III: World's First Partially-Stacked CMOS SensorNew MB-N14 Power Battery Pack

The MB-N14, scheduled for release in summer 2024, can hold two EN-EL15c batteries, allowing extended shooting time. It is dust and drip resistant and functions in temperatures as low as -10°C.

Nikon Z6III: World's First Partially-Stacked CMOS SensorPrice and Availability

The Nikon Z6III will be available in late June for $2,496.95 USD (body-only) or $3,099.95 USD (with NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/4 lens). The MB-N14 power battery pack will be available for $359.95 USD.
