Nikon has unveiled Firmware Version 2.0 for the Z8, marking the first substantial update since the camera’s debut.
This complimentary update introduces a range of features and improvements aimed at enhancing still photography, video recording, and overall workflow. Many of the new features align with those previously introduced in the Z9, Nikon’s higher-end model.
New Features for Advanced Autofocus and Shooting Options
Among the notable additions is a specialized autofocus option for birds, enhancing the camera’s ability to detect and focus on birds against complex backgrounds such as forests and mountains. The firmware also introduces an Auto Capture feature, which triggers automatic shooting based on predefined criteria such as motion direction, distance, and subject detection. This function supports both still and video capture, offering flexibility for various shooting scenarios.
Pixel Shift for Ultra High-Resolution Images
The update includes Pixel Shift technology, allowing users to produce images up to 180 megapixels by merging multiple NEF (RAW) files. This feature is particularly useful for capturing detailed shots of buildings, artworks, and other intricate subjects, ensuring precise color and texture reproduction.
Enhancements for Portrait Photography
A new Rich Tone Portrait Picture Control has been added, designed to produce portraits with rich tones while preserving skin details. This control is ideal for base image creation in retouching scenarios, such as weddings and studio shoots. The update enriches Nikon’s portrait photography capabilities, including options for balancing portrait impressions and softening skin.
Additional Operational Improvements
The firmware expands the customization options for camera controls and introduces several user interface enhancements for improved operability. These include the ability to exit zoom with a half-press of the shutter button in manual focus mode, new shutter sound and volume controls, adjustable focus-point border widths, and the option to omit shooting orientation data from image EXIF information. Furthermore, a new preference setting for focusing on faces during playback zoom and a redesigned user interface for tethered shooting contribute to a more efficient workflow.
With Firmware Version 2.0, Nikon Z8 users gain access to advanced features and functionalities that enhance both creativity and productivity, reaffirming Nikon’s commitment to delivering cutting-edge technology to photographers.
