Nikon Introduces Firmware Update 5.00 for Z9 Camera

Following its acquisition of RED, Nikon has unveiled firmware version 5.00 for its premier Z9 mirrorless hybrid camera.

Although this update brings numerous enhancements, it does not introduce internal R3D recording capabilities, which some may have hoped for. This article delves into the key features of the update.

Video and Photography Settings Customization

The firmware now allows users to save their preferred video recording settings in dedicated shooting banks. This separation from photography settings enables faster access to desired resolution, frame rate, RAW settings, and file types.

Enhanced Functionality of Fn Buttons

Users gain additional customization for the Fn buttons across Photo, Video, and Playback modes. New assignable functions include Focus Position, Skin Softening, Portrait Impression Balance, AF-Area Mode, Playback Speed, Retouch items, and more. Nikon has introduced new Picture Controls such as Rich Tone Portrait, Flat Monochrome, and Deep Tone Monochrome, along with improvements in Portrait Impression Balance and Skin Softening.

Focus Point and Flicker Reduction Improvements

The update offers an option to increase the focus point’s border thickness, enhancing its visibility against various subjects. It also simplifies flicker reduction with four shutter-speed presets to counteract LED light banding, with customization available for specific venues.

Expanded Video Recording Capabilities

Significant additions and modifications include advanced configuration for auto capture, DX image area options, airplane subject detection, manual focus compatibility, and extended detection range for Advanced: Distance. Additionally, High-Res Zoom and Live View display zoom have been enhanced, offering up to 400% zoom and color changes in AF-area brackets.

Photography Enhancements

Updates include a C15 high-speed frame capture mode, customizable high-frequency flicker reduction, and new image quality options for high-speed frame capture. Live view display zoom is improved, and the Profoto A10’s LED light can now assist autofocus.

Playback, Control, and Network Improvements

The firmware adds playback speed adjustments, retouch customization, and auto image rotation during playback. Custom controls and roles receive further expansions, allowing for individual photo and video mode selections. Network enhancements include warnings for unstable connections to ATOMOS AirGlu BT accessories and new Wi-Fi connection options.

Other Updates and Fixes

Nikon has addressed issues related to AF fine-tuning, burst shooting operations, and subject detection accuracy. The GNSS module firmware has been updated for better satellite acquisition performance.

The update process takes approximately 6 minutes, with a delay possible when updating from firmware versions earlier than 2.00. Users are advised not to turn off the camera until the update is complete, ensuring the successful installation of these enhancements.
