NiSi Expands ATHENA Prime Lens Line

NiSi Expands ATHENA Prime Lens Line with Three New Models

A year after its debut at NAB 2023, NiSi has broadened its ATHENA prime lens collection by introducing three additional models: the 18mm T2.2, the 40mm T1.9, and the 135mm T2.2.

These new offerings enhance the lineup by filling in missing focal lengths and extending the range to longer telephoto options, all the while keeping consistent optical and physical traits. The 135mm T2.2 lens stands out for its length but retains the familiar placement of the aperture and focus rings found on other models. The 18mm and 135mm lenses both have a T2.2 aperture, whereas the 40mm model matches the rest of the series with a T1.9 aperture.

Background on the ATHENA Prime Line

NiSi’s ATHENA prime lenses were introduced to the market as an affordable option in the cine prime category, traditionally known for higher pricing. By offering lenses around $1,000 each, NiSi, along with other primarily Chinese manufacturers, has made it possible for a broader range of filmmakers to access quality lenses without the steep expense. These lenses come close to matching the image quality of higher-priced counterparts and provide a positive user experience with features like aligned focus and aperture rings, as well as uniform size and weight across the series.

Specifications and Features

The ATHENA lenses, excluding the 135mm model, maintain a lightweight design around 800g (1.75lb) with a PL mount, increasing to approximately 890g (1.96lb) with a mirrorless mount. The focus and aperture rings are geared for precision and are marked with luminous color for visibility. The new 18mm lens offers a slightly faster T2.2 aperture compared to the ultra-wide 14mm T2.4 lens and includes a 77mm front filter thread, a standard across the series except for the 14mm model.

Mount Compatibility

NiSi provides the ATHENA lenses in several mount options, including the standard PL mount, which allows for wide compatibility through adapters. For mirrorless camera users, there are options available with or without a drop-in filter slot, covering Sony E-mount, L-mount, and Canon RF mount. Although the lenses are designed with protruding elements, which may not accommodate all types of adapters or internal filters.

Target Audience and Usage

These lenses are ideal for independent filmmakers and content creators looking for high-quality cine lenses at a more accessible price point. The addition of the 18mm, 40mm, and 135mm lenses offers filmmakers more versatility in their creative endeavors, making these lenses well-suited for gimbal use and various shooting environments.

Pricing and Availability

Priced at $1,286 each, the new lenses maintain affordability. NiSi also offers a package deal for existing customers to acquire the new lenses with a durable 9-lens hard case for $3,499, and a full 8-lens set for newcomers at $8,999, including the case. The lenses are currently available for pre-order, with delivery dates to be announced.
