In 1991, Nordisk Film Shortcut AS, a prominent post-production company in Scandinavia, embarked on a significant upgrade at its Oslo facility. The aim was to meet Dolby’s stringent requirements, focusing on creating a Dolby Atmos 7.1.4 environment using a Genelec Smart Active Monitoring System.
Pål Svennevig, CTO at Shortcut, highlighted the necessity of this upgrade. He noted the industry’s increasing demand for Atmos HE rooms for projects with major streaming platforms like Netflix and HBO MAX. This led to the decision to revamp the studio extensively.

Legacy and Commitment to Excellence Shortcut has a storied history in film and production, consistently blending high-end post-production services with state-of-the-art technology and expertise. Their services range widely, covering minor edits to complete post-production management.
The Challenge of Selecting Monitors The first hurdle in the upgrade process was choosing the right monitors. Svennevig pointed out the need for active monitors with Class D technology, appropriate SPL, long throw for the LCR, and an integrated subwoofer. This led them to collaborate with Benum Norway AS and select Genelec as their monitor provider.
Tailored Audio Solution with Genelec The Genelec Smart Active Monitors were chosen for their specific fit for the studio’s needs. Three S360 monitors were used for left, centre, and right channels. Four 8350 monitors handled the surround sound, with four 8340 models for the height channels. A 7382 subwoofer was added for its powerful and clear bass, creating a unified audio environment.
Collaborative Acoustic Design Effort Shortcut and Tofastrud Romakustikk AS worked closely on the acoustic design. Lars Tofastrud played a pivotal role in designing, tuning, and adjusting the studio’s acoustics, particularly for the new Dolby Atmos space.
Comprehensive Installation Process The installation required a coordinated effort between Shortcut, Benum Norway, and Tofastrud Romakustikk, encompassing everything from the projection system to the monitors, ensuring a fully integrated and optimal setup for the Atmos HE specifications.
