Okinawa Cable Network Inc. leverages Harmonic’s cOS platform for efficient, high-speed internet and 10G FTTH path.
Harmonic (NASDAQ: HLIT) has announced a significant collaboration with Okinawa Cable Network Inc. (OCN) in Japan, marking a major step in broadband network modernization. Utilizing Harmonic’s cOS broadband platform, formerly known as CableOS, OCN is set to deliver enhanced, high-speed internet services to its subscribers, while also paving the way for 10G fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) technology.
Hiromitsu Awai, Board Director at OCN, highlighted the cOS virtualized core software’s proven efficiency in providing agility for broadband operators. This move towards a virtualized Converged Cable Access Platform (CCAP) and Distributed Access Architecture (DAA) with Remote PHY not only significantly reduces OCN’s operational expenses in terms of power, space, and cooling but also enables the delivery of faster bandwidth speeds over the DOCSIS network with high service availability.
OCN’s deployment of the cOS broadband platform in a DAA framework includes Harmonic’s Reef Remote PHY DAA shelves. This setup addresses capacity challenges with increased agility and cost-effectiveness, allowing for a smooth transition to fiber and DOCSIS network convergence. The high-density Reef DAA shelves offer the needed flexibility for bandwidth scaling at a lower total ownership cost. Furthermore, OCN is utilizing Harmonic’s cOS Central, a service-based cloud application suite, for proactive network intelligence. This integration provides comprehensive insights into system health and network performance, enhanced by streaming telemetry data and AI capabilities for real-time service quality improvement.
Dan Gledhill, Senior Vice President, Broadband Business Operations at Harmonic, emphasized the significance of OCN’s strategic network transformation. By replacing legacy integrated CCAP and network equipment with Harmonic’s advanced virtualized solutions and network edge devices, OCN has boosted its network capabilities, increased capacity, and improved performance. This modernization enables OCN to swiftly deliver 10G fiber and DOCSIS broadband services over a unified network infrastructure.
Sumitomo Electric Industries, Ltd., a key reseller and system integrator based in Japan, played a crucial role in ensuring a smooth and swift deployment of the new systems.
