The OCTOPUS16, a compact Super16 box-style camera, is currently in the prototype stage. OCTOPUS CINEMA has made considerable progress with working prototypes and has even released sample footage showcasing the camera’s capabilities.

Prototype Specifications
  • The camera boasts a Super 16mm format UHD-4K CMOS sensor with a 3856 x 2180 resolution and a 2.9µm pixel pitch, featuring a rolling shutter.
  • It incorporates dual gain sensor architecture with a 16-bit readout mode to enhance dynamic range and latitude.
  • The device supports internal 4K 12-bit CinemaDNG recording at up to 24fps and 1080p recording up to 90fps onto CFexpress type B cards.
  • It features an interchangeable CS-mount lens system, an aluminum frame for heat dissipation, and a Raspberry Pi Compute Module 4 as its brain, including integrated WiFi/Bluetooth.
  • The camera comes with a 2.8″ Rec709 calibrated touchscreen display and boasts an extremely low power consumption, with a 5W draw during RAW recording.
Planned Enhancements
  • Future updates include 48fps 4K slow motion recording, a full-size HDMI port, analog mic and headphone jacks, a dedicated timecode input, an integrated 6-axis IMU for stabilization metadata, and compatibility with Gyroflow for on-board gyro electronics.
Market Position and Strategy

OCTOPUS CINEMA aims to fill a niche in the digital Super16 market segment, addressing the demand for using S16 lenses without compromising on image quality. The development of the OCTOPUS16 reflects a strategic pivot towards providing a cost-effective solution for filmmakers seeking high-resolution output from a compact and efficient camera system.

Sample Footage

The company has released two sample videos taken with the OCTOPUS16 prototype. The first video, released in September 2023, features shots from NYC using a Cosmicar 12.5mm lens. The second video, from January 2024, showcases footage from a public transport bus, likely in London, demonstrating the camera’s 16-bit sensor readout capability for improved dynamic range, filmed with a Laowa 7.5mm T2.1 lens.

OCTOPUS CINEMA’s venture into the Super16 camera market with the OCTOPUS16 signifies a promising advancement in making high-quality filmmaking more accessible to a wider audience.
