Quanteec will present its next-generation peer-to-peer (P2P) streaming solutions at IBC2024 in Amsterdam.
The company’s technology is designed to significantly reduce the use of Content Delivery Networks (CDNs) in live streaming, offering an average energy saving of 40-50% and a minimum cost saving of 25%.
Sustainable P2P Delivery Solution
The P2P delivery solution was designed with sustainability as a key metric. The software utilizes existing capacity in viewer devices to resend streams to other viewers without noticeable impact on user experiences. This approach helps manage viewership peaks, typical of major live events, without relying heavily on CDN capacity. In contrast to traditional CDN use, where streaming capacity must be pre-signed off in anticipation of peak traffic, Quanteec’s solution simplifies transmission as more users log on.
Company Vision and Mission
Daniel Négru, Quanteec co-founder and CEO, stated, “We aim to show broadcasters, especially those focused on sustainability, that delivering major events to large audiences can be done in a more efficient, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly manner.” Quanteec was established in 2021 to address two main issues in live event streaming: handling traffic peaks without deploying additional servers and making streaming more sustainable.
Implementation by Major Broadcasters
Major broadcasters are adopting Quanteec’s technology this year in anticipation of high viewing numbers for summer sporting events. This adoption allows them to prepare for large audience peaks, save energy by using existing devices with unused delivery capacity, and reduce CDN costs.
Key Highlights at IBC2024
Streaming Major Sports Events
This year features a summer full of world-class sports events. A 2021 study from Grabyo showed that 79% of sports fans prefer streaming sports. At IBC2024, Quanteec will demonstrate how its technology assists leading broadcasters in streaming major sporting events at lower costs and with reduced environmental impact using P2P technology.
Ultra-low Latency
Latency has been a significant challenge in past P2P-based live streaming solutions, typically resulting in delays as video passes between multiple peers. Quanteec’s technology has reduced this time to milliseconds, achieving less than 2 seconds overall latency. The company will showcase how its technology enables ultra-low-latency live streaming.
Sustainability Metrics
Measurement is crucial for sustainability progress. Quanteec provides monitoring tools that enable broadcasters to track energy savings by reducing reliance on traditional CDNs. At IBC2024, Quanteec will demonstrate how content owners can track energy savings and environmental impact in real-time. The company will also showcase plug-ins and data allowing individual viewers to monitor and engage with their energy footprint.
In-Stadium Streaming
Live sports events are increasingly becoming multimedia experiences. Top stadiums in the U.S. and Europe are adopting 6 GHz Wi-Fi and 5G technology to provide digital content directly to fan devices. Quanteec, in partnership with Videon Labs, will demonstrate the ability to produce and stream live content entirely from within the stadium using the Videon LiveEdge 2Go solution and Quanteec P2P technology, eliminating the need for external CDNs.
IBC Accelerator Project 2024 – Ecoflow
Quanteec is contributing to Ecoflow, an IBC Accelerator project focused on energy-conserving optimization for future-ready, low-impact online workflows. Ecoflow addresses the environmental impact of broadcasting by developing metrics for energy consumption across the video delivery supply chain. Supported by the BBC, ITV, EBU, and Netherlands’ RTL, the project aims to demonstrate measurable delivery workloads, enable broadcasters to test and compare energy-saving features, and provide preferred measurement guidance.
