RED and ARRI Rental Collaborate to Create Custom V-RAPTOR XL for DNA Glass Compatibility

In a notable event within the film industry, RED Digital Cinema’s President, Jarred Land, showcased a special edition V-RAPTOR XL camera on social media. This unique version was developed in collaboration with ARRI Rental, specifically for the filming of the upcoming movie “Tron: Ares”.

The partnership, a rare occurrence involving two major brands in cinematography, was initiated to support the creative vision of cinematographer Jeff Cronenweth.

The RED x ARRI Rental V-RAPTOR XL: A Unique Design
The special edition camera distinguishes itself from the standard black V-RAPTOR XL with a custom grey finish and a prominent TRON logo. Jarred Land revealed that this camera is tailored to be used with ARRI Rental’s DNA glass. However, it remains unclear whether this pertains to the Prime DNA lenses or the DNA LF set. Both lens series, known for their blend of modern and vintage aesthetics, are exclusively available through ARRI Rental.

Technical Specifications and Adaptations
A significant aspect of this collaboration lies in the technical adaptations. The standard V-RAPTOR XL is compatible with interchangeable PL/EF lens mounts, whereas the ARRI Rental lenses come with an ARRI LPL mount. Therefore, a technical compromise was necessary for this partnership. Additionally, the standard V-RAPTOR XL is equipped with either an 8K S35 or an 8K Vista Vision sensor. However, Land did not specify if any modifications to the sensor technology were made for this special edition.

A Step Forward in Film Technology
While certain aspects of this collaboration between RED and ARRI Rental remain undisclosed, the partnership marks a significant step in the advancement of film technology. It exemplifies the industry’s willingness to collaborate for the sake of artistic progression in filmmaking.
