RED Digital Cinema has expanded its DSMC3 camera lineup with the launch of its flagship model, the V-RAPTOR [X]. This new camera, alongside the V-RAPTOR XL [X], showcases an 8K Vista Vision Global Shutter Sensor capable of recording up to 120fps in 8K.
ese models maintain the body design of their predecessors but feature a newly engineered sensor. RED claims these cameras offer an impressive dynamic range, with a standard 17+ stops and up to 20+ stops in Extended Highlights mode.
Advanced Features and Capabilities The V-RAPTOR [X] and V-RAPTOR XL [X] come equipped with a Phantom Track dual-capture function, tailored for virtual production, allowing simultaneous recording of the final and green screen images. These cameras maintain most features of the original V-RAPTOR models, such as resolution, frame rate options, and connectivity. However, RED has enhanced the audio hardware with improved pre-amps and refined the on-sensor phase detection autofocus with face detection.
Camera Upgrade Program RED has also reintroduced its Camera Upgrade Program. This program offers existing V-RAPTOR and V-RAPTOR XL owners an opportunity to upgrade their cameras to the new [X] sensor’s capabilities.
Launch of New Compact EVF In addition to the cameras, RED is releasing a new electronic viewfinder, the Compact EVF, which integrates video, power, and data in a single-cable design. This viewfinder is compatible with DSMC2/Ranger and DSMC3 cameras (with an adapter) and features a 1080p micro-OLED display, adjustable diopter, and customizable buttons. The Compact EVF is not compatible with the original KOMODO but will support KOMODO-X following a firmware update in Q1 2024. The viewfinder is available separately or in a pack with additional accessories.
