Westdeutscher Rundfunk (WDR) has chosen Riedel Communications to update the media and intercom network at its Filmhaus facility in Cologne, following a competitive public tender.
The decision was influenced by the efficiency, flexibility, and future-oriented design of the Riedel technology, supplied by system integrator Studio Hamburg Media Consult International (MCI) GmbH.
Located in the heart of Cologne, the Filmhaus is central to WDR’s operations, encompassing journalistic and technical activities. The building is currently being renovated to meet modern and anticipated media production needs, including updates to office spaces, conference rooms, and areas dedicated to editorial work and cross-media production.
Technology and Partnership
Maximilian Below, Managing Director at Studio Hamburg MCI, expressed confidence in the partnership with Riedel, citing their proven track record in numerous projects. The renewal plan includes the implementation of Riedel’s Artist intercom and MediorNet HorizoN technologies.
The MediorNet infrastructure, which includes MediorNet HorizoN, MicroN UHD, and MicroN devices, will enable WDR to manage audio and video signals flexibly across the Filmhaus. This setup supports extensive multiviewing and processing capabilities and is integral to the transition to a media-over-IP infrastructure.
Future-Proofing Media Operations
Patrick Mandl, Riedel’s Product Manager for Video, highlighted the forward-looking capabilities of MediorNet HorizoN. The platform offers 128 IP gateways per rack unit, facilitating the transition from SDI to ST 2110 IP environments. This allows WDR to incorporate new IP production technologies gradually and cost-effectively.
Enhancing Communication Capabilities
As part of the intercom system expansion, WDR will implement Artist-1024 and 1200 Series SmartPanels, integrated into the existing network through trunking. This system will enhance connectivity across all WDR production locations in central Cologne, promoting seamless communication throughout the premises.
Marco Kraft, Riedel’s Regional Sales Director for DACH, expressed enthusiasm about supporting WDR’s vision for a flexible and reliable IP-based media infrastructure with the implementation of MediorNet HorizoN.
