During the Mobile World Congress 2024, taking place from February 26 to 29 at stand 5A80 in Fira Gran Via, Barcelona, Rohde & Schwarz will unveil a comprehensive ecosystem for the cutting-edge 5G Broadcast standard.

This technology promises new revenue opportunities for both broadcasters and network operators. The company will highlight the system’s readiness for deployment and outline ways to generate additional income.

Understanding 5G Broadcast

5G Broadcast is a broadcast technology defined in the 3GPP specifications, designed for one-to-many communications. It offers a solution for simultaneously transmitting media and data to a large audience of mobile devices, making it perfect for distributing live content like sports and music events through pop-up channels. Notably, the technology allows mobile devices to receive media broadcasts without requiring a SIM card, and supports data broadcasting suitable for IoT and automotive updates.

Rohde & Schwarz’s Role in 5G Broadcast Development

Rohde & Schwarz has been instrumental in the development and standardization of 5G Broadcast, collaborating with entities such as ETSI JTC Broadcast and 5G-MAG. Their efforts have led to the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) recognizing 5G Broadcast as a global standard for next-generation digital terrestrial television (DTT). This acknowledgment paves the way for more flexible use of the UHF spectrum and supports the industry’s move towards sustainability.

Commercial Interest and Opportunities

After conducting numerous demonstrations and pilot projects, Rohde & Schwarz has established a complete, ready-to-market end-to-end solution for 5G Broadcast. This advancement is garnering attention from network operators and content providers worldwide, who view it as a pathway to unlock new business models and revenue sources.

Thomas Janner, Director of R&D Broadcast Applications at Rohde & Schwarz, emphasized the benefits of 5G Broadcast for network operators, noting its simplicity as an upgrade to existing transmitters. He highlighted the technology’s potential for mobile television without burdening network traffic and the vast opportunities it presents for data delivery services, especially to automotive and IoT sectors.
