Ross Production Services Integrates New Calrec Argo S Mixing Desks

Ross Production Services (RPS) has significantly upgraded its studio capabilities by introducing three Calrec 60-fader Argo S consoles. This move marks RPS’s initial venture into IP technology within the studio, as noted by Calrec.

These new consoles are situated within three Remote Integration Model (REMI) control rooms at the studio, which are dedicated to servicing prominent clients such as CBS, ESPN, Athlete’s Unlimited, and EA Sports. Calrec played a key role in integrating these consoles into the facility.

Adapting to Changing Times and Expanding Capabilities
Nick Minore, the Business Manager at RPS, explained the upgrade: “The necessity to build our studios emerged during the COVID pandemic. As we faced a growing number of events annually, stepping into IP technology was an essential move to broaden our horizons. Integrating Argo consoles with the ImPulse core is a strategic enhancement focusing more on REMI productions. Furthermore, we plan to synchronize these with Calrec’s RP1 remote production units for upcoming events.”

Calrec Apollo Console Relocated to RPS’s New Box Truck
The addition of the Argo consoles has also allowed RPS to shift its Calrec Apollo console into a newly acquired 40-foot RPS box truck, which continues to use the Hydra2 network.

Comprehensive Update to RPS’s Mobile Units with Calrec Technology
All of RPS’s Sprinter van mobile units now feature integrated Calrec Brios. This update signifies a complete transition to a Calrec-equipped audio fleet, coinciding with the introduction of new FIN1, FIN3, and FIN4 Sprinter vans this year. RPS’s current Calrec inventory boasts eight Brios equipped with MADI, Dante, and Hydra2 hubs, alongside one Apollo, five RP1 systems, and three Argo consoles.

Streamlining REMI Production’s Audio Management
Minore highlighted a significant advantage of the upgrade: “One of the main challenges in REMI production is audio management. Using RP1s empowers our audio engineer in Connecticut to tailor the audio transmitted back to our facility. This setup eliminates the need for constant coordination with on-site audio staff for routing or local mixing. We can effortlessly synchronize the RP1 console faders with our Argo interfaces in Connecticut, simplifying the provision of real-time IFB mixes on location.”

Recent Successes with Argo and Enhanced Learning Curve
Recent projects utilizing the Argo consoles include Athlete’s Unlimited Softball, Volleyball, and Premier Lacrosse Juniors, broadcast on ESPN Networks. Minore also mentioned the ease of adapting to the new consoles, thanks to their user interface and touchscreen interface similarities with Calrec Brio consoles.

Advantages of the New Console Features
He further added, “The ability to customize fader layouts and rearrange panels, along with modular I/O ports on the console’s rear and compatibility to sync faders with our existing RP1 system, are significant advantages of these new consoles.”
