RTL Deutschland, Vodafone test network slicing for live TV

RTL Deutschland and Vodafone are teaming up to test transmitting live interviews via high-speed mobile communications at a sports event for the first time.

The trial will take place at this weekend’s ADAC GT Masters racing series at the iconic Nürburgring in Germany. The companies will use network slicing within the LTE network to transmit live TV images.

RTL’s cameras in the pit lane are being equipped with special sim cards so that they can send back pictures to the production centre using the mobile network. It will mark the first time network slicing has been employed at a sports event. Using the technology, Vodafone says it can “cut out” part of the network and make it available specifically for the TV images.

RTL Deutschland tested network slicing earlier this year when they trialled live video production within Deutsche Telekom’s 5G standalone network.
