Samyang, a Korean lens manufacturer, has released the new Remaster Slim Optical Exchange Autofocus Lens system.

This innovative product features a unique design that includes a base unit and three interchangeable optical modules, offering a compact and versatile solution for photographers. The system is currently available for Sony E-Mount cameras.

Key Features of the System

The core of the Remaster Slim system is the Remaster Slim base, a glassless lens mount equipped with an STM autofocus motor. The base is designed as an E-mount ring with an empty barrel that houses the interchangeable optical modules. The modules are held in place by magnets and connected electronically for aperture control and EXIF data transmission.

Available Lens Modules

The Remaster Slim system includes three optical modules: 21mm f/3.5, 28mm f/3.5, and 32mm f/2.8. These lenses are designed with compactness in mind, featuring complex optical formulas with 6-7 elements, including aspherical and ED elements for enhanced image quality. Despite their small size, the lenses aim to deliver reliable performance for wide-angle photography.

Design and Optical Performance

The Remaster Slim system is designed to revive the concept of compact 35mm cameras, with lens modules that are less than 2cm long and weigh approximately 80g each. Although the system is currently only available for Sony E-Mount, it appears to be a good match for cameras like the Panasonic LUMIX S9. Early sample images suggest that the lenses produce a look reminiscent of older compact cameras, which may appeal to some users while others may find the optical performance less impressive.

Market Appeal and Practicality

While the Remaster Slim system offers an innovative approach to lens design, its appeal may be limited by the compromises associated with compact optics. The lenses have relatively slow apertures, and the overall size reduction may not be significant when the camera body is factored in. Additionally, the deeper depth of field may resemble the image quality of compact cameras or smartphones, which now offer effective bokeh simulations.

Pricing and Availability

The Samyang Remaster Slim Optical Exchange Autofocus Lens system is currently available only in South Korea, priced at around $230. The system is compatible with Sony E-Mount cameras, and there is potential for future expansion to other mounts.
