ST Engineering iDirect, a global satellite communications provider, has been selected to continue its work on Indonesia’s Satria-1 satellite network project, moving into Phase Two of the deployment.

Following the completion of Phase One, where ST Engineering iDirect deployed its next-generation hub infrastructure across Indonesia, the company will now support additional capacity and further expansion across the nation’s archipelago.

New Gateways to Provide Expanded Capacity

The second phase involves deploying an additional 26Gbps of satellite capacity via new gateways in Timika, Manokwari, and Jayapura. This expanded network aims to improve access to critical services in underserved areas, including educational and healthcare facilities. Up to 150,000 public service points, including 93,900 schools and 3,700 healthcare centers, will benefit from this enhanced connectivity.

Dialog Platform and Technology Readiness

In Phase One, ST Engineering iDirect implemented its Dialog platform, equipped with DCR/DBR infrastructure, to supply scalable connectivity across Indonesia. This platform enabled internet access for approximately 45 million people who previously lacked connectivity. The Dialog system supports Indonesia’s increasing digital infrastructure requirements, with flexibility to adapt to future technological needs.

Remarks from ST Engineering iDirect and PT Bis Data Indonesia

John Arnold, Regional Vice President of Asia Sales at ST Engineering iDirect, stated that the company’s rapid deployment of the first gateway for Satria-1 underscores its commitment to Indonesia’s connectivity initiatives. He noted that the platform’s technology would help ensure that even remote regions have access to essential services.

Nicolas Tannady, CEO of PT Bis Data Indonesia, remarked on the project’s progress, emphasizing that Phase One’s success highlighted the impact of ST Engineering iDirect’s technology and deployment capabilities. Tannady expressed confidence that Phase Two would continue this trajectory, positioning Indonesia to further advance in satellite communications.

Satria-1 Satellite’s Role in Bridging Indonesia’s Digital Divide

Launched in 2023 with a total capacity of 150Gbps, the Satria-1 satellite is among Asia’s largest and is central to Indonesia’s digital inclusion goals. ST Engineering iDirect’s infrastructure has been selected to support government timelines with scalable, flexible technology. This groundwork also allows future migration to Intuition, ST Engineering iDirect’s cloud-native next-generation ground system, equipping Indonesia with a future-ready solution for satellite services expansion.
