NUGEN Audio Tools in Film and Streaming: Kramer’s Experience

Sound Director and Audio Product Manager Scott Kramer has spent his career working across film, television and streaming.

He worked as a re-recording mixer in Southern California for 15 years and later served eight years as a sound director at Netflix. His current role combines creative sound direction with product development responsibilities.

Work with NUGEN Audio

Kramer began using NUGEN Audio tools nearly ten years ago, when the company became widely used for loudness measurement. He notes that NUGEN’s technical accuracy and reliability formed the basis of his long-term use of the products.

Kramer frequently uses several NUGEN plug-ins. He was introduced to the Monofilter plug-in while working with Mark Binder on the Netflix film Extraction. He emphasizes that the plug-in strengthens low-frequency consistency in stereo mixes.

He also relies on ISL True Peak Limiter and VisLM Loudness Meter for all deliverables. During his time at Netflix, VisLM was used regularly to check incoming content against platform specifications.

Kramer calls DialogCheck one of his most significant collaborations. The project connected Fraunhofer IDMT and NUGEN Audio to create a tool aimed at improving speech intelligibility. He clarifies that the plug-in is made for mixers, not for quality control teams, and helps balance mix decisions between studio conditions and home playback.

Design Approach

According to Kramer, NUGEN Audio stands out for straightforward design, technical accuracy and practical usability. He states that these factors support both creative work and consistent viewer experience.
