Shimbol Technology, a Chinese company known for its wireless video solutions and on-camera monitors/recorders, has recently introduced a new product – the Shimbol M5.
This product follows their earlier release, the Shimbol ZO600M wireless monitor. The Shimbol M5 stands out as the company’s first product focused solely on monitoring, offering a range of features at an affordable price.
Key Features of the Shimbol M5:
- The Shimbol M5 is a compact on-camera monitor with a 5.5-inch screen.
- It boasts a high brightness level of 1,200nits, making it suitable for use in daylight.
- The monitor features a robust build, being entirely crafted from aluminum. It measures 146.6 x 87.6 x 26.5 mm (5.77 x 3.40 x 1.04 inches) and weighs 278.5 grams (9.82 ounces).
- The screen resolution is 1920 x 1080, with a contrast ratio of 1000:1.
- Shimbol asserts that the M5 covers 100% of the Rec.709 color space and comes factory color-calibrated with a maximum Delta E of 0.6, ensuring high color accuracy.
Connectivity and Power:
- The device includes an HDMI input and output, alongside a DC input port (6.5-16.8V) on the left side.
- It supports 4K DCI resolutions at 25p and 4K UHD at up to 30p.
- The M5 is equipped with a built-in Sony NP-F battery plate on its back.
- Additionally, it features a USB Type-C port for firmware updates at the bottom, alongside a 1/4″-20 mounting point with locating pins.
- The right side houses another 1/4″-20 mounting point, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and an SD card slot for uploading custom LUTs.
Monitoring Tools and User Interface:
- The monitor includes various tools such as false color, waveform, vectorscope, histogram, peaking, anamorphic image de-squeeze, masks and framing tools, audio levels, and 3D LUT support.
- Navigation through the menu is done via the touchscreen. Additionally, there are three user-assignable function buttons and a power button on the top of the monitor for easy access to frequently used features.
Priced at only $169, the Shimbol M5 is a budget-friendly option, particularly suitable for users of mirrorless cameras with HDMI outputs who do not require 3G-SDI input/output ports or external recording capabilities.
