SIGMA Releases 50mm F1.2 Art Lens

SIGMA Launches New 50mm F1.2 Art Lens for Mirrorless Cameras

SIGMA has unveiled its latest addition to the Art lens series, the 50mm F1.2 DG DN | Art lens.

This new lens is designed for use with full-frame mirrorless cameras and is celebrated for being a high-speed standard prime lens with a compact design. According to SIGMA, this model stands as the pinnacle of achievement in the Art series lineup, offering unparalleled performance.

Optical Design and Features

The lens’s optical structure is composed of 17 elements arranged in 12 groups, which include four aspherical elements. It marks the debut of SIGMA’s 13-blade aperture system. Weighing 745g (26.3 oz.) and measuring 81.0mm by 108.8mm (3.2 inches by 4.3 inches), the lens is noted for its compactness, being 30% smaller than the SIGMA 35mm F1.2 DG DN | Art lens. Its size and weight are nearly identical to those of the SIGMA 50mm F1.4 DG DN | Art lens. It also features a 72mm front filter diameter and a minimum focusing distance of 40cm (15.8 inches).

SIGMA has engineered the lens to effectively correct for common optical aberrations, including spherical aberration, sagittal coma flare, and axial chromatic aberration, ensuring exceptional image quality.

Advanced Autofocus System

The lens incorporates a dual HLA-driven floating focusing mechanism, which optimizes optical performance across all distances, from close-up to infinity. This design also significantly reduces focus breathing. The advanced dual floating HLA autofocus mechanism delivers quick, smooth, and silent focusing capabilities. Additionally, for cameras that support it, the manual focus ring offers customizable linear or non-linear response, enhancing the user’s control over focus adjustments.

Durability and User-Friendly Features

Designed with full-frame mirrorless cameras in mind, the SIGMA 50mm F1.2 DG DN | Art lens boasts a construction that is both dust and splash-resistant. The front lens element receives a water and oil-repellent coating, while the bayonet mount is made of durable brass. The lens also features an aperture ring that can be clicked or de-clicked, locked, an AFL button, and an AF/MF switch, catering to a variety of shooting preferences.

Pricing and Availability

Available in both L-Mount and Sony E-mount options, the SIGMA 50mm F1.2 DG DN | Art lens is scheduled to begin shipping on April 18, 2024, with a retail price of $1,399 USD. For comparison, the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 DG DN Art Lens is currently priced at $849 USD.
