SmallRig has launched new cooling systems designed specifically for Sony, Canon, and FUJIFILM mirrorless cameras.
These systems, which feature a heatsink and a fan powered via USB-C, aim to prevent camera overheating and extend recording times.
The Need for Effective Cooling in Mirrorless Cameras
As mirrorless cameras have become increasingly compact while offering higher resolutions, frame rates, and codecs, heat dissipation has become a significant issue. Many hybrid cameras are not built to record footage for extended periods, leading to potential overheating. Notably, the Canon EOS R5/R6 series faced significant attention at launch for its overheating problems.
Solutions from the Market
To address these issues, companies like Tilta and Ulanzi developed small cooling systems that attach to the back of cameras with the LCD screen open behind the sensor. Following suit, SmallRig has introduced three distinct cooling systems compatible with Sony, Canon, and FUJIFILM mirrorless cameras.
Features of the SmallRig Cooling System
The SmallRig cooling system measures 7 x 5 x 2cm (2.75 x 1.96 x 0.78 inches) and is made of aluminum and plastic. It includes eight mounting brackets, making it compatible with a range of cameras, including:
- Sony: ZV-E10, ZV-1, ZV-E1, a7 IV, a7S III, a7C II, a7C, a6700, FX3, FX30
- Canon: EOS 70D, R5, R6, R7, R8, R10, RP, R50
- FUJIFILM: X-T4, X-S10
At the back of the unit, users will find a power switch, a USB-C power input, a temperature display, and an air intake/outlet. The system requires external power as it does not have a built-in battery and operates at a low noise level of around 38 dB.
Performance Claims
SmallRig claims that using their cooling system with the Sony ZV-E1 (XAVC HS 4K60P) at 25°C (77°F) can extend the maximum recording time from 30 minutes without overheating to unlimited. However, at an ambient temperature of 40°C (104°F), the system only adds 8 minutes of recording time.
Pricing and Availability
The SmallRig cooling system for Sony, Canon, and FUJIFILM cameras is available now for $49.99 (model 4815). Additionally, a version specifically designed for Sony cameras is available for $69.99, though it does not appear to offer enhanced efficiency compared to the universal version.
