Sony Launches 8K BURANO Camera in Europe

Sony has commenced the distribution of its BURANO camera, a compact 8K CineAlta model, throughout Europe.

This device is distinguished by its blend of advanced features and design, positioning it as a unique offering in the high-end cinema camera market. The BURANO combines elements from Sony’s Venice and FX9 cameras, offering the superior sensor and image quality of the Venice with select advantages from the FX9. Notably, it introduces the first in-body image stabilization for a PL-Mount camera.

Innovative Design Meets Cutting-Edge Technology

Introduced in September 2023, the BURANO camera stands out for not only its specifications but also its design philosophy, which diverges from the traditional approach of most high-end cinema cameras. Instead of focusing solely on sensor improvements, dynamic range, or color accuracy, the BURANO integrates new operational features designed to enhance the shooting workflow.

The camera is priced at $25,000, targeting a specific market segment that includes individual operators, production studios, and rental services. Its features include an 8.6K full-frame sensor, dual native ISO settings, the same color science as the Venice 2, and the distinction of being the first PL-Mount camera to offer In-Body Image Stabilization (IBIS). It also introduces the world’s first combination of IBIS with built-in electronic ND filters, capable of 2-7 stops.

Specifications and Unique Features

The BURANO supports X-OCN LT 16-bit RAW recording and the new XAVC H codec, which extends H.265 to support resolutions up to 8K. It’s the first Cinema Line camera to utilize CFexpress Type B cards for storage. The autofocus system is on par with that of the FX6 and FX9 models, and the camera’s design ensures it is more compact and lighter than the Venice 2.

Pricing and Availability in Europe

The BURANO is available for purchase across Europe at a cost of €25,000 (approximately £21,490.77). In the U.S., the price remains $25,000. Availability may vary by dealer, but shipments are currently underway.
