Sony Announces Free DCI 4K Recording License for α7S III Cameras with Firmware 3.00

Owners of the α7S III camera will soon have the opportunity to enhance their video recording capabilities. Sony is set to introduce a new license that enables DCI 4K video recording, surpassing the traditional 4K resolution.

This upcoming license will allow the α7S III to record videos at a DCI 4K resolution, which is 4096×2160 pixels. This resolution is notably wider than the standard 4K resolution, also known as QFHD, which stands at 3840×2160 pixels. Users will be able to select a frame rate of 24.00p, offering a cinematic video experience.

Important Limitations

However, there are several limitations to consider. When recording in 24.00p, the camera will not support proxy video recording. Moreover, changing to or from the 24.00p frame rate will necessitate a reboot of the camera, which could affect the shooting workflow.

Availability and Requirements

The new license will be made available for cameras running on firmware version 3.00, which is scheduled to be announced in March. The good news for α7S III owners is that the license will be free of charge and, once installed, it will be valid for an unlimited time. This update comes after a significant period without firmware upgrades for the α7S III, with the last update released in September 2022.
