Sony has unveiled the Alpha 9 III, a pioneering full-frame mirrorless camera featuring the world’s first global shutter, capable of 4K video recording at 120 fps
Introduction of Sony Alpha 9 III
Sony has recently launched the Alpha 9 III, a groundbreaking full-frame mirrorless camera that stands out with its world-first global shutter, capable of recording 4K video at an impressive 120 frames per second. This state-of-the-art camera, designed with professional photographers in mind, offers advanced features like AI-driven processing, real-time recognition autofocus, and the ability to capture images at high burst speeds without the issues of rolling shutter or blackout.
Community Feedback and Features
Yang Cheng, Vice President of Imaging Solutions at Sony Electronics, emphasized the camera’s development being heavily influenced by feedback from the photography community. The Alpha 9 III is equipped with a 24.6 megapixel Exmor RS CMOS sensor and Sony’s latest BIONZ XR processor, enhancing its ability to track and recognize subjects in real time with up to 8 stops of 5-axis in-body image stabilization, thereby ensuring high-quality images.
Advanced Autofocus and Speed
The camera’s autofocus system utilizes focal plane phase detection, powered by artificial intelligence, to identify and track various subjects. It is capable of focusing on eyes and achieves a maximum shutter speed of 1/80,000 second, capturing images that are typically challenging to perceive with the naked eye.
Enhanced Imaging and Shooting Features
Other notable features include a high-frequency flicker function to address sync issues under LED lighting, a pre-capture function that records up to one second before shutter release, and a Continuous Shooting Speed Boost function that allows shutter speed adjustments during shooting. The camera’s large memory buffer can store up to 390 fine JPEG images at 30 frames per second.
State-of-the-Art Video Capabilities
In terms of video capabilities, the Alpha 9 III supports 10-bit 4K video recording at up to 120 frames per second without cropping, 4K60p video with 6K oversampling, and the ability to capture 16-bit raw footage via HDMI to an external recorder. Utilizing S-Cinetone color science, akin to Sony’s VENICE cinema camera, the Alpha 9 III enables filmmakers to produce cinematic videos directly from the camera, without needing post-processing. It also supports S-Log3 with the option to apply a custom LUT for capturing in a preset color gamut.
Connectivity and Storage
For connectivity, the camera boasts high-speed Wi-Fi on the 5 GHz band, facilitating rapid file transfers and uploads via FTP. It is compatible with CF Express Type A or UHS-II memory cards, and SSDs can be connected through its USB 3.2 Type-C port. Additionally, the Alpha 9 III features a 4-axis articulating LCD touchscreen and a high-resolution 9.44 million dot Quad XGA OLED electronic viewfinder.
