Sony has recently announced a new feature for its Alpha camera series, particularly starting with the Alpha 7 IV model.
This feature, set to be available from March 2024, allows photographers to import up to four unique gridlines. This addition aims to improve the overall photography experience by offering more precision and consistency in composing images.
A Questionable Marketing Strategy?
While Sony labels this feature as “innovative,” some photographers, including myself, find it odd that Sony is charging for this service. Many believe that such a feature should be included as part of a free firmware update, not as a paid license. Although it’s a welcome addition, the decision to charge for it has raised some eyebrows.
Comparison with Other Brands and Tools
It’s noteworthy that several other mirrorless hybrid cameras, including those from Nikon, Panasonic, and Sigma, already have the functionality to use grid lines. Furthermore, nearly all external monitors available in the market offer the capability to set or use custom frame lines. These custom grid lines are particularly useful for shooting in specific aspect ratios, using anamorphic lenses, or framing for multiple aspect ratios in open gate shooting.
Availability and Additional Features
The license will be accessible via the Upgrade and License Management Suite in Spring 2024. Sony views this step as a significant advancement in their ongoing efforts to support and enhance the skills of photographers. Notably, the gridlines will be visible on both the Electronic Viewfinder (EVF) and any attached LCD monitors during shooting, provided the clean output option isn’t selected. Additionally, the license includes options for partially filled transparency masks, which Sony believes will foster greater creativity and work efficiency in various photography fields.
