Sony has recently launched a new firmware update, version 4.02, for its AXS-A1TS48 media cards.

This update primarily focuses on enhancing the playback stability of ProRes video clips.

Firmware Update Procedure

Users need to follow specific steps to successfully update their AXS memory cards:

  1. Pre-Update Preparations: It’s crucial to fully format the AXS memory card using the AXSM Drive Utility before initiating the firmware update.
  2. During the Update: Users must ensure that they do not power off the drive unit or the computer, disconnect any cables, or remove the media from the drive during the update process. Interruptions can potentially cause damage to the media.
  3. Closing Applications: All applications, except for the AXSM Drive Utility, should be closed. Additionally, users should ensure all files and folders on the media are also closed before starting the update.
  4. Compatibility Note: The AXS-AR1 model is compatible only with Mac computers.

Executing the Update:

  • In the AXSM Drive Utility, users should select the media in the tree display and then click the [Update Firmware] button.
  • Next, they need to select the latest firmware for the AXS memory card and click [OK]. This will start the firmware update process.
  • A completion message will appear once the update is finished. Users should click [OK].

Post-Update Actions Depending on the Device and OS:

  • Mac with AXS-CR1: Users should drag and drop the AXS memory card icon to the Trash.
  • Mac with AXS-AR1 or AXS-AR3: The AXS memory card icon will automatically disappear after the update.
  • Windows with AXS-CR1: The AXS memory card icon will disappear automatically post-update.
  • Windows with AXS-AR3: The AXS memory card will remount automatically. Users need to unmount it using the operating system’s provided methods.

Final Steps:

  • After ensuring the icon is no longer displayed, remove the AXS memory card from the drive.
  • Reinsert the card into the drive and verify that the firmware version has been updated correctly.
