Sony has launched the ECM-L1, a new omnidirectional lavalier microphone designed for professional videographers and amateurs aiming to enhance sound quality in their videos while maintaining a straightforward setup.
Positioned between the professional and consumer markets, the ECM-L1 offers improved sound quality and durability. It is a plug-in power version of the ECM-77 and serves as an upgrade to the consumer-focused ECM-LV1.
Features and Design
The ECM-L1 incorporates several key features from the high-end ECM-77 model. The microphone capsule is housed in a machined brass casing to minimize external resonance and improve sound quality. It uses a ceramic electrode plate to achieve low noise and high-resolution audio. The microphone is equipped with an oxygen-free copper (OFC) cable to reduce transmission loss during recording.
Durability and Reliability
The ECM-L1 is built for reliability and durability. Its capsule is protected by a brass housing to reduce the risk of deformation or damage. A screw-lock connector is included to prevent accidental disconnections. The 2.2mm diameter cable is designed to withstand bending and tensile stress, enhancing the microphone’s resilience during use.
Compatibility
The ECM-L1 features plug-in power, making it compatible with various devices equipped with a 3.5mm microphone jack, including cameras, wireless receivers, IC recorders, and smartphones. It also comes with two windscreens—metal and fur types—to minimize unwanted noise.
Availability
The Sony ECM-L1 will be available from mid to late October 2024, with a retail price of $279.99.
