Sony has officially announced the FE 85mm F1.4 GM II (SEL85F14GM2), an updated version of their popular portrait lens.
This second-generation model is scheduled for release in September 2024 and brings notable improvements in terms of size, weight, and performance. The FE 85mm F1.4 GM II is designed for Sony E-mount users, appealing to both photographers and filmmakers.
Compact and Lightweight Design
As the 76th lens in Sony’s E-mount lineup, the FE 85mm F1.4 GM II is engineered to optimize the capabilities of Sony’s latest Alpha series full-frame cameras. The lens weighs approximately 642 grams (22.7 oz) and has a diameter of 84.7mm with a length of 107.3mm. Compared to its predecessor, this new model is 20% lighter and 13% smaller in volume, making it a practical option for users who frequently work in the field or on extended shoots.
Improved Optical Performance
The optical design of the FE 85mm F1.4 GM II has been refined to enhance image quality. The lens includes two XA (extreme aspherical) and two ED (extra-low dispersion) elements to effectively reduce aberrations and deliver sharp, high-resolution images across the frame. Additionally, the lens features Sony’s Nano AR Coating II technology, which is designed to minimize flare and ghosting, improving image quality in challenging lighting conditions.

Enhanced Autofocus System
One of the significant improvements in the FE 85mm F1.4 GM II is its autofocus system. Sony claims that the new model offers AF speeds up to three times faster than the previous version, with subject tracking performance improved by up to seven times. This enhancement may support continuous shooting at up to 120fps on the Alpha 9 III, depending on the camera body and shooting conditions. The lens features an internal focusing mechanism and uses an XD (extreme dynamic) linear motor, providing quiet autofocus operation and linear response manual focus.
Exterior Features and Build Quality
The lens is equipped with two customizable focus hold buttons and an AF/MF switch for flexible operation. It also features an independent aperture ring and linear response MF focus control, designed to offer intuitive handling during shoots. The lens is built with a dust and moisture-resistant design, and its front element is coated with fluorine to repel fingerprints and dust, ensuring durability and ease of use in various shooting environments.
