Sony FR7 Firmware Update Adds 709tone Base Look for Professional Color and Gamma Settings

Sony has recently upgraded the FR7 full-frame pan-tilt-zoom camera with a comprehensive firmware update

This update, which was released on November 28th of the previous year, includes a variety of enhancements aimed at improving the camera’s functionality in professional settings.

Key Features of the Update

  1. Integration with VR/AR Systems: The update introduces support for the Free-d protocol, facilitating the camera’s use in virtual and augmented reality systems.
  2. Third-Party Lens Controller Support: Compatibility with third-party lens controllers is now available, enhancing manual zoom lens operation.
  3. New Picture Profile – 709tone Base: A significant addition is the 709tone Base look, which provides users with professional color and gamma settings. This feature resembles the older LC-709 look profile found in F5/F55 cameras. The 709tone Base is a standard Rec.709 picture profile used for recording a pre-defined look directly in-camera, different from S-Cinetone and not applicable with S-Log3 shooting.

Additional Enhancements and Improvements

  • The firmware adds Zoom Sync, a feature that synchronizes the transition of pan, tilt, and zoom when restoring a preset position.
  • Adjustable Zoom/Focus speeds are now supported when restoring preset positions.
  • The update includes a Stop function in the Web App for preset position restoration.
  • Enhanced PTZ trace function for recording and playback framing operations during preset position restoration.
  • Shutter control is now supported by several remote control panels and software, including the RCP-1500/1501, RCP-1530, RCP-3100, RCP-3500/3501, MSU-1000, MSU-1500, MSU-3000, MSU-3500, HZC-RCP5, and HZC-CSM10.
  • Movie file naming has been improved with the Camera ID + Reel# format.
  • Flexible ISO and Cine EI Quick shooting modes are introduced, allowing for adjustable ISO sensitivity in S-Log3 recording and automatic base ISO adjustment in conjunction with EI value.
  • Recording a 3D LUT file to the same memory card with the base look used during shooting is now possible.
  • Enhanced autofocus frame rates in Slow & Quick Motion settings.
  • Support for RTMP/RTMPS protocols is added.
  • Overall operational stability of the camera has been improved.

This firmware update significantly enhances the Sony FR7’s capabilities, particularly for professional broadcasting and VR/AR applications, by introducing new features and improving existing functionalities.
