Sony has unveiled its latest marvel in the world of cinema cameras, the BURANO. Positioned between the VENICE 2 and FX9, this camera is set to redefine cinematic shooting with its impressive technical specifications. Notably, it’s the world’s first PL-mount camera equipped with in-body stabilization (IBIS) and the first-ever camera to combine IBIS with built-in ND.
Key Features of Sony BURANO:
- Resolution: 8.6K with dual native ISO of 800 and 3200.
- Mount: First PL mount camera with built-in IBIS.
- Codecs: X-OCN LT RAW and the new XAVC H for 8K.
- Autofocus: Inherits autofocus functionalities from the FX9 and FX6 cameras.
- Recording Medium: Uses CF Express Type B, an industry standard.
- Design: Compact and lightweight, weighing only 2.85kg.
- Price: Set at €25,000 plus tax, available from spring 2024.
The BURANO’s 8.6K sensor is believed to be built on the foundation of the VENICE 2, promising exceptional color science. The camera also introduces four new “cinematic looks” for enhanced visual storytelling.
Sony’s decision to incorporate CF Express Type B as the recording medium is a welcome change, moving away from proprietary card formats. This shift ensures faster memory cards at more affordable prices.
The camera’s design is ergonomic, making it comfortable for handheld shooting and shoulder mounting. The included 3.5-inch LCD monitor offers touch focus and can double as a viewfinder with an attached loupe. An optional redesigned handle and grip provide enhanced flexibility and ease of use.
Sony’s BURANO is a testament to the brand’s commitment to innovation, offering filmmakers a tool that combines the best of technology with artistic freedom.
