Sony has unveiled upcoming firmware updates for the FX6 and VENICE 2 cameras. However, these updates will not be immediately accessible and are expected to be released in a few months’ time.

In the summer of 2023, Sony will introduce FX6 Version 4.0 and VENICE 2 Version 2.1. FX6 Version 4.0 enhances the camera’s capabilities by incorporating new functionalities. These include a de-squeeze feature for anamorphic lenses and autofocus support in S&Q mode. The de-squeeze function allows users to select the de-squeeze ratio for the HDMI output image and the ViewFinder display, though only 1.3x and 2.0x options are available. Autofocus will be available at a frame rate of 7 fps or higher in S&Q mode, providing added convenience for FX6 users. Additionally, FX6 Version 4.0 introduces Cine EI Quick support, streamlining the production workflow by aligning file naming with other Cinema Line cameras.

Furthermore, alongside FX6 Version 4.0, Sony will release VENICE 2 Version 2.1. This update improves the zoom to fit function for the 3:2 aspect ratio of the VENICE 2’s imager. Previously, the zoom to fit feature resulted in a narrower angle than expected due to side cropping of the 17:9 viewing angle. With Version 2.1, cropping will be adjusted to encompass the entire full-frame 3:2 area. Additionally, VENICE 2 Version 2.1 will introduce zoom to fit 2.39:1 for 3:2 imager modes.

Sony also plans to launch the VENICE 2 Version 3.0 firmware update in early 2024. This update is tailored to address feedback from the filmmaking community and will include various enhancements. Notable features of Version 3.0 comprise a new frame line generator, improved high frame rate anamorphic modes, and enhanced functionality for live events. The update will introduce a new external frame line generator tool, enabling import/export capability for frame line generation. High frame rate modes will be improved, enabling shooting at 90 fps with 2x anamorphic lenses, and a new 33.333 variable FPS will be added to mitigate flickering at 50Hz.

Additionally, Version 3.0 will offer features to enhance color fidelity for in-camera VFX when working with both standard production lighting and LED volumes. Moreover, the update will enhance the VENICE 2’s suitability for live cinematic multicam productions, incorporating an improved paint menu and RM/RCP Control. These additions will allow adjustments for saturation, skin detail, white balance, and shutter, even when RCP/RM paint control is disabled. Furthermore, Version 3.0 will enable 3D-LUT selection when RCP/RM paint control is enabled.

Availability

The FX6 Version 4.0 and VENICE 2 Version 2.1 updates are expected to be available in the summer of 2023, while VENICE 2 Version 3.0 will be released in early 2024.

Sony will showcase the new firmware updates at the Sony booth during the Cine Gear Expo 2023.
