Steve Carson, Director of BBC Scotland, has announced his decision to step down after seven years in Scotland and eleven years with the broadcaster.

Carson shared his plans with staff at BBC Scotland’s headquarters in Glasgow, revealing he will be moving to Dublin in the autumn to take up a new role with the Republic of Ireland’s public service broadcaster, RTÉ.

Reflecting on His Tenure

Carson expressed his gratitude for his time at BBC Scotland, stating, “It has been the honour of my life to serve as Director of BBC Scotland, and it has been a privilege to meet and work with so many talented people and teams across the country.” He highlighted the key achievements during his tenure, including the launch of the BBC Scotland channel, the creation of landmark series such as Guilt and Rebus, increased license fee investment in Scotland, expanded live sports coverage, and significant audience growth on the BBC’s digital platforms like iPlayer, Sounds, News, and Sport.

Leadership and Legacy

Rhodri Talfan Davies, the BBC’s Director of Nations, praised Carson’s contributions, noting his “shrewd judgement, focus on audiences, and impressive creative instincts” as vital to BBC Scotland’s success. He also commended Carson for his commitment to the Scottish production sector and his supportive leadership.

Search for Successor and Future Plans

The search for Carson’s successor will begin immediately, with Carson remaining in his role until mid-September. He reflected on his leadership during challenging times, particularly during the Covid pandemic and the coverage of Queen Elizabeth’s passing. Carson also mentioned the recent partnership agreement with MG ALBA to strengthen Gaelic services and the establishment of a new BBC network Audio base.
