Maria: CBS Sports will redefine live sports broadcasting at Super Bowl LVIII with 165 cameras, including 4K HDR, ‘Nickified’ Nickelodeon presentations, and innovative aerial and AR technologies. So, Mary, I know that you were curious about this.

Mary: Yes, I wanted to ask Philip about this. Over the years, it always seems to me that sports programming really drives new technological innovations. Is that your experience, and what do you think about what they’re going to show this year?

Philip: Yeah, what’s noteworthy about this is that it’s a giant laboratory every year. With 30, 40, 50 million people watching, it’s one of the largest watched sporting events in the world, now gone global. A lot of this technology that gets tested in this environment eventually makes its way into the standards for the NFL and other organizations. It’s always interesting to see which technology they choose and decide to use. Is it for the wow factor, or do they think it will bring more viewership? At the end of the day, more viewers mean you can charge more for advertising. Like the popular saying, ‘The only reason television shows exist is to break up the space between commercials; because commercials is what pays for all of it’. The fact that they’re using 165 cameras, VR, HDR, and 4K is fascinating. It’s interesting to see what tech gets debuted and how it’s adopted by the rest of the stadiums and live production trucks. This technology allows every single angle to be available, which is quite impressive. Being a nerd and a technologist, I’m happy to see any of this stuff get tested and evaluated. So I guess I shouldn’t complain too much.

Mary: Over the years, do you have any examples of technology that has gone on to really be adopted mainstream and failed technology experiments at the Super Bowl?

Philip: They tend to adopt cutting-edge technology. The adoption of HD was significant, as sports tend to push the envelope and drive some of the stuff we see in television technology. The original super zoom was actually an 8K camera that could  zoom into HD levels and get four times the zoom. However, some tech, like 3D, failed not necessarily because of the NFL or the Super Bowl but because it wasn’t ready for prime time or just wasn’t effective. They did indeed have 3D at one time at the Super Bowl and everyone thought it was going to be amazing and then 3D died on the line maybe because of how burdensome its production is.  Now, with companies like Canon making dual fisheye lenses. VR tech and Apple releasing their Vision Pro, it’ll be interesting to see in the next year or two how many other competitors will start consuming tech like that. The integration of secondary screen information about players and their stats becomes very important. I’ll be interested to see whether this is successful and how the tech manufacturers view this success.

CBS Sports to Use 165 Cameras for Super Bowl LVIII, Introducing 1080p and 4K HDR Broadcast

Maria: Launching an innovative cloud platform, Strada integrates AI to transform media workflows, offering features like multi-cloud syncing, automatic transcription, AI-based tagging, and analysis for filmmakers and content creators worldwide. So, Mary, I know that you were curious about this as well.

Mary: So, Philip, I wanted to ask you about this as well. How does this work? I mean, not the deep tech, but just how do you see them using the AI?

Philip: Yeah, I know Michael, a wonderful person who has been involved in a lot of creative companies. They’re really people who were in the industry inventing tech to help others in the industry. So, I think we still have a pretty long road to go on AI and where it’s really going to fit in. To some extent, it’s reducing the menial jobs, the tasks that interns used to do, which in itself can have an effect on what we do in our industry. But it’s the first one out of the gate that’s got a big name attached to it, so we’ll see.

Mary: Excellent. And do you see this as something that a lot of other companies will start really focusing on?

Philip: I think so. We’ll have the four stages of grief, so to speak. We’ll figure out in the next 18 to 36 months where that starts to fit into the ecosystem.

Strada, a novel cloud platform enhanced by AI, is set to make its debut on February 1st.

Maria: That’s all the time we have. Many thanks to our experts, Philip and Mary. And don’t forget to comment on the news that we’ve discussed. See you next week at the same time!
