The Advanced HDR by Technicolor team, a collaboration involving InterDigital and Philips, will be present at the NAB 2024 event in Las Vegas from April 13 to 17.
The team plans to demonstrate their bandwidth-efficient distribution solutions for high dynamic range (HDR) video, applicable to various types of content streaming services and live broadcast workflows. These demonstrations will take place in multiple locations throughout the conference, such as the ATSC booth in West Hall, the Ultra HD Forum, and a private meeting room reserved for invited guests only.
Expert Sessions and Opportunities for Engagement
David Touzé of InterDigital is scheduled to lead a session addressing the challenges of HDR-SDR conversion for live production, underlining the importance of interoperability in single-master production workflows. This presentation is part of the Broadcast Engineering and IT Conference, set for April 16.
Representatives from the Advanced HDR by Technicolor initiative will be available for discussions on the latest developments and advancements. This year, they emphasize the uniqueness of their HDR broadcasting solution via ATSC 3.0 NEXTGEN TV stations and its growing adoption among OTT streaming service providers. The solution’s capacity to process any HDR content into an 8-bit SDR file efficiently, without quality loss or bandwidth increase, is a key highlight.
Technological Advancements and Sustainability
Advanced HDR by Technicolor stands out for its single-master workflow, which enables seamless HDR and SDR production without sacrificing source fidelity. It avoids common streaming artifacts and supports dynamic conversion processes, differentiating it from solutions relying on static LUTs. Moreover, it incorporates machine learning to manage image quality dynamically during live productions, ensuring maximum dynamic range and color volume.
From a sustainability perspective, the solution’s approach to distribution significantly reduces resource and energy usage, aligning with broader environmental goals.
About Advanced HDR by Technicolor
Advanced HDR by Technicolor, born from the collaboration of Philips, InterDigital, and Technicolor, represents a cutting-edge suite of HDR solutions. It utilizes machine learning to enhance image quality across production, distribution, and display stages. The suite includes the Intelligent Tone Management (ITM) tool for SDR to HDR conversion and the Single Layer HDR (SL-HDR) for creating high-quality broadcast streams from varied content sources. SL-HDR1, in particular, ensures backward compatibility, allowing the best possible SDR experience for viewers without HDR-capable devices.
