Israel’s Accessible Culture Center Selects DHD SX2 Consoles for Audio Production

The Center for Accessible Culture in Tel Aviv, previously known as the Central Library for the Blind, has embarked on a significant upgrade of its studio equipment.

The renovation involves the installation of DHD SX2 radio consoles, a decision facilitated by Broadcast Design Ltd., an audio technology firm based in Jerusalem. Micha Blum, the CEO of Broadcast Design, highlighted the organization’s commitment to making classical literature and educational materials accessible to those with visual impairments and disabilities. The need for modern, user-friendly equipment led the Center to seek Broadcast Design’s expertise.

Tailoring Solutions for Accessibility

The primary objective was to furnish the Center’s production team, which includes visually impaired members, with a system that is easy to navigate and use. Broadcast Design responded by setting up a demonstration studio featuring the DHD SX2 control module coupled with an XC3 IP core. The SX2’s design, which includes a significant number of customizable physical buttons, proved to be highly beneficial for visually impaired operators. The system also incorporates Audio over IP connectivity via Audinate Dante, enhancing studio integration and flexibility.

After a trial period, the feedback from both sighted and visually impaired operators, along with the technical support team, was overwhelmingly positive. Consequently, three complete systems were procured for deployment across nine studios, with each system designed for simplicity and ease of use, particularly through the use of physical faders and buttons.

Customization and Support Features

A notable aspect of the DHD systems is their high degree of customization. This allowed for the configuration of unique control features, such as direct talkback-on and playback-mute for each studio, as well as precise loudspeaker balance control and playback levels from PC workstations. Furthermore, the DHD Assist App enables technicians to offer remote support, a significant advantage for operational flexibility.

The systems’ configurability also made it possible to assign distinct sounds to each control button, aiding non-sighted operators in identifying the functions confidently. The integration of Audio over IP technology introduces the capacity for versatile recording options and server-based backup recording across all studios.

Marc Herrmann, Managing Director of DHD audio, commended the project for its innovative use of the company’s audio production control surfaces, processing cores, and software. He expressed confidence that the features developed for the Center for Accessible Culture would benefit other organizations serving vision-impaired individuals globally.
