Upcoming Software Enhancement for Nikon Z8 and Z9 Cameras

Nikon is set to enhance the capabilities of its Z8 and Z9 full-frame mirrorless cameras with an upcoming firmware update. This improvement will introduce a groundbreaking Pre-Release Burst Mode feature.

Currently, the Nikon Z9 offers Pre-Release Burst mode for JPG images. The new update aims to expand this functionality, enabling the capture of uncompressed RAW images. This mode will enable the cameras to start capturing images in both JPG and RAW formats even before the shutter button is fully pressed.

Activation and Operation Users can activate this mode by pressing the shutter button halfway or using the AF-ON button, especially helpful when using back button focus techniques. A visual confirmation will be available in the viewfinder, where a ‘Pre’ symbol and a green dot will indicate that Pre-Release Burst is active and the camera is buffering images.

Buffering and Image Capture When the photographer fully presses the shutter button, the camera will record a sequence of images buffered during the second before the button was fully depressed. This feature ensures that critical moments are captured, significantly enhancing the camera’s utility in fast-paced shooting scenarios.

Availability of the Update This anticipated firmware update is expected to be released in late December. Nikon Z8 and Z9 users will be able to download it from the Nikon Support Website, adding a powerful new tool to their photography arsenal.
