Vaxis has once again broadened its horizons in the wireless video market with the introduction of the Atom A5 SDI monitor, enhancing the capabilities of its predecessor, the Atom A5H.
This new version brings the convenience of both SDI and HDMI connectivity to videographers, making it a versatile tool for various filming environments.
Enhanced Visual Experience and Versatility
The Atom A5 SDI maintains the compact 5.5-inch display of the original A5H model, offering a full HD resolution of 1920 x 1080. The monitor’s brightness has been enhanced to 2,000 nits and it boasts a contrast ratio of 1200:1, ensuring clear visibility even in direct sunlight.
This device can function both as a transmitter and a receiver, with a simple setting adjustment in its menu. It’s designed to support connections to two receivers simultaneously, enhancing its versatility. Additionally, the Atom A5 SDI remains compatible with previous models in the Vaxis Atom line.
Physical Attributes and Power Options
The monitor’s dimensions are notably compact, measuring 151 x 92 x 30.5 mm (approximately 7.5 x 3.6 x 1.2 inches) and it weighs 360 grams (about 9.17 ounces) without batteries. For power, users have the option to use two Sony NP-F batteries or the USB-C port. Besides, the device features HDMI ports, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and SDI ports for comprehensive connectivity.
Recording and Connectivity Features
An important addition is the SD card slot, which allows users to record and immediately playback footage, although it’s noted that the recording quality might not rival dedicated recorders. The monitor supports 1080p video at 60 frames per second for both input and output, without the ability to cross-convert between HDMI and SDI. However, using a pair of these monitors can overcome this limitation, allowing for versatile connection setups.
Advanced Monitoring and Transmission Capabilities
Vaxis has equipped the Atom A5 SDI with new antennas that support both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz frequencies, enabling the device to automatically switch to the best band to avoid interference. The monitor promises a 300-meter (approximately 1000 feet) transmission range with a 70ms latency. Moreover, it includes essential monitoring tools such as Waveform, Peaking, 3D LUTS, HDR, and more, powered by Vaxis’s AOS.
Pricing, Availability, and Accessories
Available now, the Atom A5 SDI is priced at $539. The package includes essential accessories like antennas, a 32Gb SD card, an SDI cable, a screen protector, and an instruction guide. A bundle with two monitors is also offered for $1099, adding a monitor strap, tripod, and carrying case. For additional rigging options, an optional cage is priced at $74.90, with NATO handles available for an extra $34.90.
