Originally known as Nodal, Veloscura has recently opened pre-orders for their latest product: a Sony E-mount version of the One PL mount focal reducer.
This device enables users to utilize full-frame PL mount lenses on Super35/APS-C sensor cameras, closely mimicking a full-frame field of view and depth of field. The product is priced starting at $899. Last summer marked the debut of Nodal, founded by cinematographer Joshua Chiara, with its initial launch of a 0.71x focal reducer for the RED KOMODO 6K camera, tailored to the PL to RF mount. Following a rebranding to Veloscura, the company has continued to expand its adapter offerings, now including a version for Sony E-mount cameras, with plans for Micro Four Thirds, FUJIFILM X, and PL to PL versions underway.
Features of the Veloscura One for Sony E
The Veloscura One focal reducer effectively reduces the crop factor by 0.71x when attaching full-frame or large-format PL cinema lenses to cameras with a Super35 sensor. This iteration is specifically designed for Sony E-mount camera bodies and comes in two variations: one for the Sony FX30 and equivalent models like the a6XXX series, which has slightly less rear optic clearance due to the body design, and another for Kinefinity Mavo and Edge models that support the Active E-mount (excluding compatibility with Kinefinity’s proprietary KINEMOUNT and E-mount Adapter).
Key features of the adapter include a 0.71x wider field of view, a 1-stop increase in exposure, a user-interchangeable mount with a secure locking design, a shimmable mount with adjustable back focus (including shims), and a 1/4”-20 bottom threaded hole for attachment. These specifications closely mirror those of the Metabones Speed Booster but offer enhanced clearance for the rear elements of certain PL lenses, potentially accommodating a broader range of lens options.
Lens Compatibility and Price Detail
Veloscura has provided a list of lenses that are compatible with the One focal reducer, including various spherical and anamorphic options from brands such as SIGMA, DZOFILM, Tokina, Zeiss, and Atlas, among others. However, some lenses like Nisi Athena Primes, Laowa Nanomorphs, and GreatJoy Anamorphic Lenses are noted as incompatible due to their design.
The pre-order price for the Veloscura One PL Mount Focal Reducer for Sony E-mount is set at $899.99, offering a $100 discount off the eventual retail price of $999.99. Shipping is expected to commence in April 2024. Additionally, Veloscura now offers a color customization service for an extra $89. Customers are advised to select the appropriate version of the adapter according to their camera system upon ordering.
