Grass Valley Enters Multi-Million Dollar Strategic Partnership with Diversified

Mark: Grass Valley’s renowned technology, including traditional hardware and software for media workflows on-premises, in the cloud, and in hybrid environments, will be integrated with Diversified’s solutions and services. Philip, what is DSI’s strategy in the cloud/virtual world?

Philip: I think it’s an interesting partnership. Like many systems integrators, everybody’s trying to figure out their role in this new world order. In the past, Diversified was known for rack and stack. They’d get the hardware, put it in the racks, wire it all up, install the software, and get things up and running. In this new world, where everything is software-oriented and software-defined, with things in the cloud, they’re trying to figure out their role if they don’t have to pull wires. I think Diversified has made the right choice here by building out a platform they call their IO platform. They are simplifying the process of getting signals from the ground into the cloud and from the cloud back to the ground. Now, they’re starting to layer in additional services, one being Grass Valley and their AMP platform.

This really opens up a much larger addressable market for them. In the past, setting up a full-on Grass Valley production control room was a very expensive proposition with significant hardware investments and wiring. It’s very capital-intensive. In this new model, smaller organizations can effectively rent the service for a period without that large capital investment. This whole process is being simplified by Diversified’s relationship with Grass Valley. Many vendors, like Imagine and Evertz, are looking at similar solutions because their organizations are software product-driven, not necessarily professional services-driven, although they have a significant professional services arm. This shift means going from a few hundred people globally being able to afford the solution each year to potentially thousands. They can’t scale fast enough to install, configure, and put all these things together for their customers, so they’ve enlisted the help of other organizations like Diversified.

I think it’s an interesting move for Diversified. They are sort of the 800-pound gorilla in the marketplace. Not only are they in the broadcast space, but they’re also in the AV, medical, and government spaces. Everyone is creating content these days, and the line between professional AV and broadcast AV is blurring, which I think is a good thing. It leads to better quality across the board for everyone. Overall, I think it’s a good move for both Grass Valley and Diversified. We’ll see where it eventually nets out.

Mark: Perfect as always and typical with technical issues. I’ll be transitioning us to the next topic. Vizrt, a leading provider of real-time graphics and live production solutions for content creators, has launched the PTZ3 PLUS and PTZ3 UHD PLUS cameras. These new cameras bridge the gap between Pro AV and Broadcast, offering high-quality video for live production and presentations. Philip, what are your thoughts on these specific innovations?

Vizrt has launched the PTZ3 PLUS and PTZ3 UHD PLUS cameras

Philip: Just as I mentioned before, where you’ve got Diversified in both broadcast and Pro AV and that line is sort of being blurred a little bit, so is this with the introduction of these cameras. Vizrt, who has always been known as the world leader in on-air graphics, has now, through their acquisition of NewTek, opened up their market and what they’re able to address. These new cameras provide an integrated solution for both professional broadcasters and the AV market. It’s like the saying, Mercedes can build a $100,000 car and a $3,000 car, but it’s hard for Ford to build a $100,000 car. Vizrt, being that high-end AV broadcaster, can build something that can go into the generalized AV market or the Pro AV market. These are very simple cameras using NDI single cable implementation and UHD. This will enable the next generation of production across the board for anyone looking to produce content.
