Zoom has introduced the H1 XLR, a portable audio recorder tailored for content creators. This device is designed primarily for recording high-quality audio for video projects.
Similar in design to previous models from Zoom, the H1 XLR features two XLR-1/4″ TRS combo mic/line inputs, a 3.5mm stereo jack input, and supports 32-bit float recording.
Importance of Quality Audio
Good audio is essential for producing professional-quality video content. Poor audio can make even the best visuals seem amateurish. While the focus on YouTube and other platforms is often on the visual aspects of “cinematic” content, audio quality is equally important. Zoom has long been recognized for providing cost-effective solutions for independent filmmakers and content creators. The H1 XLR continues this tradition, offering reliable audio recording at an affordable price.

Key Features of the Zoom H1 XLR
The Zoom H1 XLR comes equipped with two XLR/TRS combo inputs, which can be used for microphones, instruments, and stereo feeds. Additionally, it has a 3.5mm stereo input that is compatible with devices like on-camera microphones or Lavalier mics. This range of inputs should meet the needs of most content creators.
One of the standout features of the H1 XLR is its 32-bit float recording capability. This feature, previously found only in high-end recorders, allows users to capture a wide dynamic range of sounds without worrying about gain control. This ensures that even in environments with varying sound levels, recordings will be free from clipping. This feature is particularly useful for solo creators who may not have a dedicated sound recordist on set.

The H1 XLR’s pre-amps offer ultra-low noise performance, recording at -122dB EIN, with sample rates up to 96kHz. The device can also handle +4dBu line-level signals from mixers or other line outputs. A USB-C port allows for connection to smartphones, enabling direct audio recording to video. Additionally, the recorder can function as an audio interface with a computer, recording directly to its SD card.
User Interface and Power Options
The H1 XLR features an integrated mixer and a high-contrast OLED screen that displays a real-time waveform during recording. It also includes an onboard speaker for previewing recordings. For microphones requiring extra power, the unit provides both Phantom and Plug-in power options. The recorder can be powered by two AA batteries or an external power supply, although the power supply is not included.
