Grass Valley, a prominent developer in live production technology, introduced the T3 Series 4K/HD standalone player/recorder at the 2024 NAB Show.

This device consolidates various functionalities including recording, playback, and transcoding into a single unit. The T3 operates independently, which simplifies the setup and enhances production efficiency. It is also designed to seamlessly integrate into larger production setups, supporting a broad array of control protocols.

Technical Specifications

The new T3 model can record and play back up to two 4K video channels simultaneously or three HD channels. It is built to withstand the rigorous conditions of on-location live events, offering robust construction and compatibility with multiple codecs. This model improves on its predecessor, the T2 Series, by offering enhanced multichannel 4K and HD capabilities and seamless integration with Grass Valley’s EDIUS software for efficient editing across various file formats.

Comments from Grass Valley

Akio Inoue, the Product Manager for Editing Systems at Grass Valley, emphasized the T3’s reliability, ease of use, and versatility. According to Inoue, the T3 addresses critical operational needs in the industry for standalone, multi-channel 4K and HD recording and playback systems.

Design and Additional Features

The T3 features a more compact design, reducing the rack depth by 20% compared to the T2 Series. It also offers optional GPU acceleration, which enhances channel and format flexibility and customization.

Connectivity and Format Support

Grass Valley’s T3 stands out for its extensive support of various recording, playback, and networking formats. These include SDI and NDI inputs and outputs, and control protocols such as AMP, VDCP, BVW, GPIO, and timecode chasing. It supports multiple 4K and HD recording formats like Grass Valley HQX, Apple ProRes, and Avid DNxHR, as well as playback formats across different containers and codecs. The unit also supports the XAVC format, providing additional options for 4K and HD video processing.

Market Applications

The T3 Series is designed to meet the needs of a diverse set of users including broadcasters, TV production and corporate A/V studios, houses of worship, live event producers, CATV service providers, video equipment rental companies, and sports stadiums. It offers a cost-effective, user-friendly solution with its intuitive playlist operations.
