Harmonic has launched the Beacon intelligent speed maximiser (ISM), a new application now part of its cOS virtualized broadband platform.
This application works alongside Harmonic’s well-established vCMTS and fiber solutions. The Beacon ISM improves spectrum efficiency, thereby boosting upstream and downstream speeds for individual subscribers, which enhances their overall quality of experience (QoE). This improvement is expected to help in growing subscriber revenue and improving customer retention.
Technological Advancements and Network Reliability
The Beacon ISM represents a significant advancement in edge compute technology on the cOS platform. It provides enhanced scalability, security, and reliability over traditional profile management applications (PMA), which makes it a valuable tool for operators using DOCSIS 3.1 networks. Nimrod Ben-Natan, senior vice president and general manager of Harmonic’s Broadband Business, emphasized the importance of network reliability, particularly as demands for higher speeds increase. He stated that the Beacon application introduces a new level of broadband QoE by using integrated automations to maximize spectrum efficiency and bandwidth, ensuring reliable service for each subscriber under various network conditions.
Simplified Deployment and Operational Efficiency
The Beacon ISM simplifies the entire deployment process and addresses the delays often associated with traditional PMAs. Its capability to dynamically respond to network impairments and fluctuations in subscriber traffic helps operators proactively manage issues before they affect service. This proactive management reduces the need for on-site repairs, lowers operational expenses, and increases service speed and reliability.
Integration with Advanced Technologies
Built on the cOS platform’s horizontally scalable architecture, the Beacon ISM incorporates advanced artificial intelligence and machine learning technologies. These technologies work in tandem with the cOS Central Analytics service, providing operators with real-time insights into network health and performance. The integration of these technologies underlines Harmonic’s ongoing commitment to streamlining operations and enhancing broadband network capabilities.
Industry Impact
Harmonic’s cOS platform, which has received an Emmy Award, is recognized as the most widely deployed virtualized core software in the industry. It currently delivers next-generation broadband services to over 28 million homes and is utilized by more than 110 service providers globally, including major operators in the U.S., Europe, Latin America, and Asia.
